Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 12:34 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

Fishing Overview Arlington

Fishing in Arlington, Texas revolves around Lake Arlington and the surrounding Trinity River watershed, with additional opportunities just a short drive away on Joe Pool Lake and other North Texas reservoirs. Warm water, abundant baitfish, and a long growing season create consistent action for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and white bass almost every month of the year.

Seasonal patterns are predictable in this part of Texas. In late winter and early spring, bass transition from deeper main-lake structure toward staging points and shallow coves. Focus on secondary points, riprap, and creek channel swings with lipless crankbaits, suspending jerkbaits, and Texas-rigged plastics. As water temps push into the 60s, bass spawn in protected pockets with a firm bottom; soft plastics, creature baits, and weightless stickbaits pitched tight to cover produce well.

Crappie follow a similar spring migration, stacking up on bridge pilings, marinas, and timber near creek channels before pushing shallow to spawn. Use small jigs (1/16–1/8 oz) in natural shad or chartreuse patterns, or live minnows under a fixed or slip float. Post-spawn, both bass and crappie slide back to brush piles, docks, and deeper structure; marking man-made brush with electronics and methodically working each pile is a key summer strategy.

Through summer, early and late in the day are prime. On Lake Arlington and nearby lakes, look for schooling white bass and hybrids chasing shad on windblown points and mid-lake humps. Watch for surface activity and birds; silver spoons, small swimbaits, and tail-spinners cast into the frenzy are highly effective. Midday, slow your approach with Carolina rigs, deep-diving crankbaits, or drop-shots on offshore structure in 12–25 feet.

Catfish are a reliable option year-round around Arlington. Channel cats and blues concentrate on ledges, channel bends, and windward banks where bait collects. Punch bait, cut shad, or chicken-based baits fished on slip rigs or simple bottom rigs catch numbers of eaters. For larger blue catfish, target deeper channels, humps, and river sections with fresh cut bait, especially in cooler months when trophy fish roam more aggressively.

Key habitat types around Arlington include riprap along causeways and dams, man-made brush piles, boat docks, creek channels, and shallow flats with scattered wood. Riprap holds bass, crappie, and catfish nearly all year; work it with crankbaits, jigs, and live bait depending on your target. Docks and marinas provide shade and vertical cover—skip soft plastics or pitch jigs into the darkest pockets for bigger bass and crappie.

Bank anglers can do well by focusing on accessible points, parks, and bridge crossings around Lake Arlington and along the Trinity River. Carry a compact selection: a medium-power spinning combo with soft plastics and small crankbaits for bass, plus a simple bottom rig with cut bait or dough bait for catfish. Position baits where current seams, edges of riprap, or visible cover intersect with depth changes.

For consistent success around Arlington, match your approach to water temperature, clarity, and wind. Move often until you locate fish, then slow down and thoroughly work productive structure. The mix of urban convenience and diverse fisheries makes Arlington a strong base for North Texas freshwater fishing.

The Best Fishing Spots around Arlington

Fletcher's Cove

A classic Potomac River hotspot known for the spring American and hickory shad run (March–May), plus striped bass schoolies, blue and channel catfish, and largemouth/smallmouth bass through the warmer months; rowboats and canoes make it easy to reach current seams, while the canal and shoreline offer reliable bank access; it’s minutes from Chain Bridge.

Hains Point

At the tip of East Potomac Park where the Potomac meets the Washington Channel, this long riprapped shoreline produces striped bass in spring and fall, with steady action for white perch and catfish much of the year; the points and bends concentrate bait and current, and it pairs well with nearby Washington Channel for roaming fish.

Chain Bridge

Perched above the Potomac Gorge, the area around Chain Bridge is famed for spring shad and striped bass runs and for its rocky habitat that holds smallmouth bass much of the season; eddies and seams below the bridge are prime casting lanes and it’s a short hop from Fletcher's Cove if you want to cover both.

Washington Channel

Running between East Potomac Park and the Southwest Waterfront, the channel’s seawalls, piers, and marinas attract white perch, schoolie striped bass, crappie, and catfish; it fishes well from shore or small boat, with tidal swings concentrating bites near structure; it sits adjacent to the Tidal Basin.

Dyke Marsh

A broad tidal marsh on the Potomac just south of Alexandria, Dyke Marsh’s grass edges and channels hold largemouth bass, invasive northern snakehead, crappie, and white perch; kayaks and small boats shine in the creeks, while trails offer selective shoreline access from Belle Haven Marina.

Tidal Basin

This iconic impoundment adjacent to the monuments yields crappie, largemouth bass, white perch, and catfish, with occasional spring striped bass pushing through; tidal exchanges draw fish along walls and inflows, and it’s an easy walk to Hains Point for additional shoreline.

Anacostia River

A revitalized urban fishery with expansive shore access and calm backwaters for small craft, the Anacostia offers powerful blue catfish, plentiful white perch, summer snakehead in grass, and resident largemouth bass; its lower reaches connect quickly to the Washington Channel.

Jones Point

Under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge at Alexandria’s southern tip, Jones Point’s riprap, eddies, and bridge pilings hold striped bass, white perch, and catfish, with roaming schools pushing bait to the banks on moving tides; it’s a short ride upriver to Dyke Marsh.

Occoquan River

From the town of Occoquan downstream through the tidal reach, this river is renowned for trophy blue catfish, thriving snakehead, and solid largemouth bass, with spring pulses of white perch; launch ramps and piers abound, and it links with Occoquan Reservoir upstream.

Burke Lake

A heavily visited suburban lake with ample shoreline and a no-gas-motor vibe that favors small boats, Burke Lake offers dependable largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish, with productive spring and fall bites around points, timber, and the dam; a good inland complement to Lake Accotink.
