Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Chesapeake
Chesapeake, Virginia fishing is all about diversity. The city is threaded with the Elizabeth River, Northwest River, and Intracoastal Waterway, and sits minutes from the lower Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. That mix of saltwater, brackish, and freshwater gives local anglers shots at red drum and speckled trout one day, then largemouth bass and slab crappie the next.
Seasonal patterns drive most fishing in Chesapeake. In spring, rising water temperatures push speckled trout, red drum, and school-size striped bass into the Elizabeth River, Southern Branch, and nearby inlets. Work soft-plastic paddletails or jerk shads on 1/8–1/4 oz jig heads along channel edges, riprap, and marsh points on a moving tide. Freshwater lakes and city reservoirs fire up at the same time; largemouth bass stage on points and secondary creek channels, hitting suspending jerkbaits, lipless crankbaits, and Texas-rigged soft plastics.
Summer shifts much of the action to low-light periods. Inshore, target trout, puppy drum, and flounder at dawn and dusk around bridge pilings, dock lines, and grass edges. Live mud minnows or small mullet under a popping cork are deadly in the creeks and along marsh banks. In deeper channels, jigging Gulp! on light heads near bottom produces flounder and croaker. In freshwater, focus on shade and current: bass and bluegill slide under overhanging trees, docks, and cypress knees in lakes like Lake Drummond and the Northwest River. Finesse worms, wacky rigs, and small spinnerbaits excel here, while cut bait or chicken livers on the bottom find channel and blue catfish in river holes.
Fall is peak time in the Chesapeake area. Cooling water consolidates bait and gamefish. Stripers school in the rivers and along the Intracoastal; work topwater walking baits at first light and late evening, then switch to swimbaits and diving plugs as the sun climbs. Red drum and speckled trout feed aggressively on shrimp and mullet—cover water with 3–4 inch paddle tails in natural bait colors and vary your retrieve until you dial in what they want. Freshwater lakes see some of their heaviest bass and crappie of the year; slow-roll medium crankbaits along rocky banks and vertical jig small tubes or hair jigs over brush piles and bridge pilings.
Winter doesn’t shut Chesapeake fishing down; it simply concentrates fish. Deep holes in the Elizabeth River are famous for holding cold-season speckled trout and stripers. Light jigs tipped with scented soft plastics, worked slowly near bottom, are the standard approach. For freshwater, look for bass and crappie holding on the deepest structure available; vertical presentations with jigs or drop-shot rigs pay off when fish are sluggish.
Across all seasons, success in Chesapeake comes from reading tide, structure, and water clarity. Target current seams where moving water sweeps past points, bridge pilings, and channel bends. In dirty water, lean on darker baits and vibration-heavy lures; in clear water, downsize, lighten your leader, and stay stealthy. Whether you launch a bass boat, paddle a kayak, or fish from public piers and shorelines, Chesapeake offers consistent, close-to-town fishing with trophy potential in every direction.
