Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:46 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Colonial Heights

Colonial Heights, Virginia sits in a prime corridor where the tidal James and Appomattox Rivers meet, creating diverse fishing for bass, catfish, stripers, crappie and panfish. The mix of current seams, deep channels, flats and tributary mouths gives anglers options in every season, whether you launch a boat, kayak, or work the bank.

Seasonal patterns drive the bite. In early spring, water warming in the Appomattox’s backwaters and coves pulls in largemouth bass, crappie and sunfish. Target north-facing shorelines, wood laydowns and shallow eddies with small jigs, finesse worms and suspending jerkbaits. Shad and early striped bass runs come up the James around this period; small spoons, darts and shad jigs fished in mid-current draw strikes. As water temperatures climb into late spring and summer, the tidal swings become more important—fish edges of grass, riprap and docks on a moving tide for bass and white perch.

Summer nights and cool periods are prime time for blue and flathead catfish in the deep bends of both rivers. Look for sharp depth changes, outside bends and the downstream side of bridge pilings. Cut gizzard shad, live bluegill, or chicken-based baits on fish-finder rigs work well; anchor above the structure and let your baits rest just on the edge of the channel. During the day, shift to shade—bridge shadows, undercut banks and overhanging trees—where bass and panfish tuck out of the sun.

In fall, feeding activity ramps up along main-river flats and the mouths of creeks. Bass and stripers pin bait against riprap, points and shallow bars; this is the time to cover water with crankbaits, spinnerbaits and swimbaits. Crappie slide back to mid-depth brush piles and bridge pilings; vertical jig small tubes or minnows 8–15 feet down. Winter consolidates fish in the deepest nearby holes. Slowly presented jigs, blades and live bait shine when the water’s cold, especially in the Appomattox’s deeper stretches.

Habitat and access around Colonial Heights includes tidal river shorelines, rock-lined banks, marinas, bridge causeways and quiet backwaters off the main flow. Key features to target are:

  • Outside bends with visible current breaks or eddies
  • Riprap banks and bridge abutments for bass, stripers and panfish
  • Deep channel ledges for blue catfish
  • Creek mouths and small inlets, especially on a falling tide
  • Downed trees, brush and dock pilings for crappie and bluegill

Techniques and tactical tips revolve around reading the tide and current. Plan your bass and striper trips around the two hours bracketing peak current—both incoming and outgoing—and focus on ambush spots where moving water pushes bait past cover. For catfish, give each anchor spot 20–30 minutes; if you don’t get bit, move a short distance to a different depth or angle on the same structure. Use heavier sinkers in strong current to keep baits pinned, and step up leader strength around rocks and timber. Downsizing line and lure profiles helps in clear, low water, while stained conditions let you go heavier and brighter. By matching your tactics to the tide, season and structure, Colonial Heights’ stretch of the James and Appomattox can consistently produce quality fish.
