Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Newport News
Newport News, Virginia sits on some of the most productive fishing water in the mid-Atlantic, where the James River meets the lower Chesapeake Bay. The mix of saltwater, brackish, and freshwater gives anglers a year-round lineup of striped bass, red drum, speckled trout, croaker, flounder, catfish, and panfish. Access is excellent, with multiple public piers, shorelines, and ramps along the Newport News waterfront.
Seasonal patterns drive most of the action. In early spring, look upriver and in creeks for warming shallows that draw white perch, yellow perch, and early stripers. Soft plastics on light jigheads, shad darts, and small minnows produce well around creek mouths and channel edges. By late spring, the James River near Newport News becomes a strong producer for blue catfish using cut bait on fish-finder rigs, while croaker, spot, and flounder start showing along the channel ledges and near bridge pilings.
Summer is prime time in Newport News. Night fishing around lighted piers and bridges is extremely effective for croaker, spot, trout, and schoolie stripers. Shrimp, bloodworms, and squid strips on bottom rigs will keep rods bending for bottom species. Work soft paddle-tails and MirrOlure-style plugs along grass edges and riprap for speckled trout and puppy drum on moving tides. When water temperatures peak, focus on deeper structure: bridge pilings, channel drops, and rock piles where current breaks give gamefish an ambush point.
Fall brings some of the most consistent fishing of the year. Cooling water triggers big runs of striped bass, speckled trout, and red drum in the lower James and nearby bay waters. Cast jigs and swimbaits around bait schools marked on sonar or visible on the surface. Troll small diving plugs or bucktail jigs along channel edges for stripers. For trout and drum, target creek mouths, oyster bars, and shoreline points on mid to late stages of the tide, when current concentrates bait.
Winter action centers on deeper, stable water. Blue catfish remain a reliable option in the James River using fresh cut shad, menhaden, or eel on sturdy bottom rigs. Striped bass and speckled trout hold in deeper holes, around bridge spans, and near channel bends; slow down presentations with heavier jigheads and subtle soft plastics close to the bottom.
Habitat variety is a key advantage around Newport News. Anglers can fish:
- Bridge pilings and rock riprap for stripers, sheepshead, and trout
- Oyster beds and shell bottom for drum, trout, and flounder
- Deep channels for croaker, catfish, and migratory stripers
- Creeks and backwaters for perch, panfish, and juvenile drum
Match your tactics to the tide: moving water almost always outfishes slack. Use lighter leaders and smaller hooks when the water is clear or the bite is finicky, and step up to heavier gear around structure and big cats. Keep a few go-to setups ready — a medium spinning outfit with 10–15 lb braid for trout and drum, a heavier bottom rig rod for cats and croaker, and a jigging or plugging outfit for stripers — and you’ll be well equipped to take advantage of Newport News’ diverse fishing opportunities.
