Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:48 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Richmond

Fishing in Richmond, VA centers on the James River, a nationally known fishery running right through downtown, backed up by a network of park ponds and nearby reservoirs. Anglers can target giant blue catfish, river smallmouth, and spring shad within minutes of the city, with year-round bank and boat access plus excellent kayak water.

Seasonally, Richmond fishing follows the James River’s flow, temperature, and tide patterns. Late winter into early spring is prime time for trophy blue catfish; slow currents and cold water concentrate big fish in deep outside bends and channel edges. March–May, American and hickory shad push upriver toward the fall line around the Richmond Pipeline and downtown bridges, drawing in striped bass and aggressive white perch. By late spring and summer, smallmouth and largemouth bass action picks up in the riffles, ledges, and wood cover from Bosher’s Dam through the urban rapids, while night-fishing for catfish stays productive in the tidal stretches below the city. Fall brings a strong bite for bass, crappie, and perch as baitfish school up in creek mouths and along rock edges.

Richmond’s water is a mix of tidal river, rocky shoals, and still-water ponds. Above the fall line, the James is a classic smallmouth river with boulder gardens, ledges, and deep pockets; target current seams, eddies behind rock piles, and undercut banks. In the tidal stretch below downtown, expect deeper channels, mud flats, and drop-offs—ideal for big blue cats, gar, and stripers when salinity and flow are right. City and county parks offer additional options: lakes like Shields Lake, Bryan Park, and nearby county ponds hold bass, crappie, sunfish, and stocked trout in cooler months.

Techniques should match both season and section of river. For blue catfish, most local anglers rely on cut bait—fresh gizzard shad, alewife, or menhaden—fished on fish-finder rigs with 3–8 oz sinkers to hold bottom on the tide. Focus on channel edges, deep bends, and the downstream side of bridge pilings. For the shad run, small shad darts, spoons, and 1/16–1/8 oz jigheads in chartreuse, pink, and gold, fished on light spinning or fly tackle, excel when cast slightly upstream and worked through the current seams.

For bass around Richmond, soft plastic craws, tubes, and ned rigs in natural green and brown tones produce consistently in the rocky upper river, while spinnerbaits and squarebill crankbaits shine around stained, higher water. In summer, work topwater walkers and poppers early and late along shoreline grass, laydowns, and current breaks. Crappie and perch relate to brush piles, submerged timber, and dock pilings in the slower stretches and ponds; 1/32–1/16 oz jigs tipped with small plastics or minnows are reliable producers.

Richmond is highly bank-fishable—bridges, riverside parks, and greenways give access to productive water without a boat. For boats and kayaks, launch near downtown to fish the fall line or downstream ramps to probe deeper tidal holes. Pay close attention to river levels, tide charts, and water clarity; small shifts in flow can reposition fish on the James River, and timing your trip around stable water and key tide phases dramatically improves catch rates.

The Best Fishing Spots around Richmond

James River

Flowing through downtown, the James River is Richmond’s signature fishery with trophy blue catfish, seasonal striped bass and American/hickory shad runs in spring, plus smallmouth bass, longnose gar, and carp around rocks and eddies; summer nights and winter cold snaps both shine for big cats, while shoreline access spans parks like Belle Isle, Pony Pasture Rapids Park, and ramps at Ancarrow’s Landing.

Belle Isle

This popular James River island features boulder fields, runs, and pools ideal for smallmouth bass, sunfish, and spring shad; low flows reveal prime wading lanes for finesse presentations, while deeper pockets hold carp and gar; it’s a classic urban shore spot with easy access and views of the fall line, with alternative access at Pony Pasture Rapids Park for similar water.

Deep Bottom Park

Situated on a broad tidal stretch of the James, Deep Bottom Park is known for trophy blue catfish on cut bait along channel edges, plus seasonal white perch, shad, and occasional stripers; shore fishing is solid along access areas and the pier, while boats probe drop-offs, confluences, and wood for steady action from spring through winter.

Lake Chesdin

A sprawling impoundment southwest of Richmond, Lake Chesdin offers strong largemouth bass fishing with spring prespawn around coves and grass, abundant crappie on brush and bridges, and summer/fall action for blue catfish and white perch; shore access is available at parks and causeways, while boats work points, timber, and creek arms; compare to Swift Creek Reservoir for closer suburban options.

Swift Creek Reservoir

This suburban reservoir in Chesterfield produces consistent largemouth bass (spring spawn and fall shad bites), dependable crappie around docks and brush, and summertime channel/blue catfish; kayak and small-boat anglers excel along grass lines and coves, while limited shoreline spots can still yield bass on plastics and crappie on minnows or jigs.

Chickahominy River

East of Richmond, the tidal Chickahominy features cypress-lined backwaters with largemouth bass (notably strong spring and early summer), plentiful crappie, and bowfin, plus runs of shad and occasional stripers nearer the confluence; boats flip pads and wood, while bank anglers target landings and park areas; it pairs well with the main James River for mixed itineraries.

Appomattox River

South of Richmond, the Appomattox offers a mix of rocky runs and tidal pools holding smallmouth bass in the upper reaches and blue/flathead catfish, crappie, and seasonal shad downstream near Hopewell; shore anglers work parks and trails around Colonial Heights and Petersburg, while boats drift deeper channels and target current breaks.
