Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:12 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next New Moon in ~15 days on 14th July
Full Moon is generally a productive time for fishing - especially night fishing. Bright nights mean that many predators feed more actively during the night. During full moon the gravitational pull is in line with the gravitational pull of the sun, affecting all wildlife and increasing feeding behaviour.
  • Distance to earth:
    404,874 km
    Proximity:
    1.9 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Dothan

Dothan, Alabama fishing revolves around nearby waters like Lake Eufaula on the Chattahoochee River, the Choctawhatchee River system, and countless farm ponds and small lakes scattered through the Wiregrass. While there’s no major reservoir in downtown Dothan, anglers are within an hour’s drive of some of the Southeast’s most reliable largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream fisheries.

Seasonal patterns drive most success. In late winter and early spring, bass on Lake Eufaula and area ponds stage on channel swings, secondary points, and the first drops outside spawning pockets. This is prime time for crankbaits, lipless cranks, and Carolina rigs in 6–12 feet. As water warms into the 60s, bass push shallow to spawn in protected coves, sandy pockets, and backwater sloughs off the main river. Sight-fishing with soft plastics, wacky-rigged finesse worms, and compact jigs works well in clearer pockets, while Texas-rigged creature baits shine in stained water.

Crappie around Dothanβ€”particularly on Eufaula and along the Chattahoocheeβ€”follow a similar timeline. Late-winter fish stack on creek-channel edges and deeper brush in 12–20 feet and respond well to tight-line minnows and small tube jigs slowly slow-trolled or vertical-jigged. As spring progresses, target shallow brush, reeds, and laydowns in 2–6 feet with bobber-and-minnow rigs or 1/16-oz jigs under a float for slab black and white crappie.

Through summer, fishing shifts deeper. On big water, bass use offshore structure: ledges, humps, river-channel drops, and shell beds. Electronics are critical; idle until you mark bait and arches, then work them with deep-diving crankbaits, big worms on football jigs, and drop-shot rigs. Early and late, topwater frogs, buzzbaits, and walking baits over grass lines and lily pads can produce explosive strikes, especially in backwaters and small lakes closer to Dothan. In ponds, focus on the dam, the deepest corners, and any aerators during the heat of the day.

Fall brings some of the most consistent action around Dothan. As water cools, shad move into creeks and pockets, and bass and hybrid stripers follow. Key on creek mouths and mid-depth flats with squarebills, spinnerbaits, and swimbaits. Crappie slide back onto brush in mid-depths, and spider-rigging or single-pole jigging around man-made piles is productive. Catfish bite well from late spring through fall along river bends, deep holes, and around bridge pilings using cut shad, chicken liver, or stink baits on Carolina rigs.

Habitat and tactical tips are straightforward in this region:

  • On Lake Eufaula and the Chattahoochee, mix grasslines, standing timber, stump fields, and ledges into your daily plan. Start shallow at low light and slide deeper as the sun climbs.
  • In small lakes and farm ponds near Dothan, quietly work the shoreline coverβ€”overhanging trees, brush, and grassβ€”with weightless soft plastics and small spinnerbaits. Scale down line to 8–12 lb for finicky fish.
  • For consistent bream and shellcracker action, fish worms or crickets under a float around bedding areas from late spring through summer. Look for sandy pockets, gravelly banks, and the inside edges of grass.
  • When water’s high or muddy on the rivers, push closer to the bank and target eddies, current breaks, and the mouths of backwaters with noisy reaction baits to help fish locate your offering.

With year-round open water and a variety of fish-rich lakes, rivers, and ponds, the Dothan area rewards anglers who adjust to seasonal movements, pay attention to water clarity and depth, and fish deliberately around key structure and cover.
