Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Duluth
Duluth fishing is defined by cold, clear Lake Superior, the fertile St. Louis River estuary, and a ring of classic Northwoods lakes. This mix gives anglers reliable options for open-water trolling, river fishing, and hardwater action almost year-round. Knowing seasonal movements and habitat shifts is the key to staying on fish in this dynamic Great Lakes port.
On Lake Superior, spring brings salmonids shallow. Coho salmon, brown trout, and kamloops rainbows cruise shorelines and river mouths when surface temps are in the 40s. Long, sweeping troll passes with small spoons and stickbaits behind inline planer boards produce from the Duluth entry up the North Shore. Flat lines 75–125 feet back often outfish deeper presentations early, especially in slightly stained water pushed by an east wind.
As summer sets in, Lake Superior’s trout and salmon slide deeper off Duluth. Downriggers and diver setups become essential to keep small, fluttering spoons and rotator-fly combos in the 60–120 foot zone over deeper structure and temperature breaks. Lake trout often relate to humps and breaks on the nearshore reef systems; watch your sonar closely and run a spread that covers multiple depths until you mark consistent arcs tight to bottom.
The St. Louis River is Duluth’s multi-species workhorse. In spring, walleyes concentrate in channel edges and current seams from the harbor upstream. Jig-and-minnow combinations pitched to the base of breaks or dragged slowly upstream get bit when the water is cold and dirty. As the estuary warms, weed growth explodes in the back bays and along shorelines, drawing in northern pike, smallmouth bass, and panfish. Casting spinnerbaits, swimbaits, or shallow-running cranks around emerging cabbage and reeds is a fast way to locate active fish.
Through summer, trolling crankbaits along channel edges and mud-to-sand transitions is a high-percentage walleye pattern on the St. Louis. Work 1.5–2.2 mph with a mix of profile sizes until you dial in the day’s preference. Smallmouth bass hug rock piles, riprap, and bridge pilings; drag tubes or ned rigs along the bottom, or work topwaters early and late on calm days when fish slide shallow to feed aggressively.
Duluth’s inland lakes around Hermantown, Proctor, and up the North Shore corridor offer reliable action for largemouth bass, bluegills, crappies, and pike. Focus on shallow bays with new weeds in late spring, then slide to outside weedlines and mid-lake humps as water temps climb. Simple slip-float rigs with small jigs or live bait are steady producers for panfish, while weedless plastics and spinnerbaits excel for bass in thicker cover.
Ice fishing in Duluth can be exceptional when conditions allow safe travel. The St. Louis estuary and protected inland lakes freeze first, offering walleye, perch, and pike on classic points and inside turns marked by local anglers. Jigging spoons tipped with minnow heads and deadsticks set just off bottom are standard. On colder winters when nearshore Lake Superior ice forms safely in protected areas, anglers target lake trout, coho, and whitefish over deep structure using heavy jigging spoons and tube jigs watched on electronics.
Weather can change quickly on Lake Superior, so successful Duluth anglers stay mobile and flexible. Keep multiple rod setups rigged for trolling, casting, and vertical jigging, study wind-driven water color changes, and use electronics to track bait and temperature breaks. This combination of big-water tactics and estuary finesse keeps Duluth near the top of any serious angler’s destination list on the western Great Lakes.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 6 beaches and bays in this area.
