Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Queensbury
Fishing in Queensbury, NY revolves around Lake George’s southern basin, Glen Lake, and nearby stretches of the Hudson River, giving anglers access to clear, cool, structure-rich water. The area supports strong populations of smallmouth and largemouth bass, trophy lake trout and landlocked salmon, plus plentiful panfish and pike. Clarity is excellent on Lake George, which makes stealth and natural presentations critical, while smaller, weedy lakes fish more traditionally with power techniques and thicker tackle.
Seasonal patterns drive most success. In early spring, focus on warming coves and inflowing streams around the southern end of Lake George and Glen Lake. Smallmouth and largemouth slide shallow to rocky shorelines, boat docks, and emerging weeds; jerkbaits, hair jigs, and suspending minnows shine in the still-cool water. As water temperatures move into the 50s and low 60s, lake trout and landlocked salmon cruise higher in the water column, making them easier to reach by flatlining stickbaits or spoons just behind the boat at first and last light.
Through summer, the clear water pushes predators deeper by day. On Lake George, concentrate on offshore humps, points, and drop-offs in 25–80 feet for smallmouth and lake trout. Use drop-shot rigs with finesse plastics, Ned rigs, and football jigs for bass, and vertically jig heavy spoons or white tubes for lakers you mark on electronics. Landlocked salmon often suspend over deep main-lake basins; slow-troll thin trolling spoons, small crankbaits, or streamer flies behind downriggers or leadcore line, running baits just above marked fish. In shallower Glen Lake and nearby ponds, weedlines and shaded docks remain productive with Texas-rigged plastics, spinnerbaits, and wacky worms.
Fall is a prime trophy window. Cooling temperatures pull smallmouth back onto rocky points and shallow reefs on Lake George, where they hammer crankbaits, jerkbaits, and topwater walking baits on cloudy, breezy days. Lake trout and salmon feed heavily along steep breaks adjacent to deep water; trolling bright spoons near structure transitions can be outstanding. In smaller lakes, big largemouth stack on remaining green weeds and wood cover—flip jigs, swim jigs, and slow-rolled spinnerbaits right into the cover.
Winter brings excellent ice fishing opportunities on Glen Lake and other protected waters around Queensbury. Perch, crappie, and bluegill roam basin flats and weed edges; target them with small tungsten jigs tipped with plastics or spikes, watching a flasher or sonar to stay on active pods of fish. For northern pike and pickerel, set tip-ups along weedlines and drop-offs, staggering depths to find the most consistent action. Lake George’s ice conditions can be variable and highly location-specific, so anglers typically target safer, sheltered bays and always prioritize careful ice checks and safety gear.
Key habitat types in the Queensbury area include steep granite shorelines, boulder fields, submerged points, island complexes, and extensive weedbeds in secondary lakes. On clear Lake George, use lighter fluorocarbon leaders, longer casts, and more natural colors—greens, browns, and translucent baitfish patterns—to overcome wary fish in high visibility. In stained or weedy lakes, step up line size and use louder, bulkier lures to call fish out of cover.
Common techniques include finesse spinning tactics for smallmouth, deep jigging and controlled-depth trolling for lake trout and salmon, and power fishing with jigs and weedless plastics for largemouth around heavy cover. Panfish anglers do well with small live minnows, worms, or tiny jigs under slip floats near docks and weed edges, especially for introducing kids to fishing. The diversity of water types around Queensbury means you can scale gear from ultralight panfish outfits to heavy jigging and trolling setups, adjusting to season, depth, and clarity to stay consistently on fish.
