October Fishing Report

Reston’s lakes are in classic fall mode. Cooling water in the low-to-mid 60s has baitfish pushing shallow on windblown banks of Lake Anne, Lake Thoreau, and Lake Audubon. Largemouth bass are chasing shad; work shallow points and coves with white spinnerbaits, small crankbaits, or suspending jerkbaits. Best time is early morning and late afternoon, especially on overcast days with a light breeze.

Crappie are schooling tighter around docks and brush in 8–15 feet—vertical-jig small plastics or fish minnows under a slip float. Bluegill remain active along remaining weed edges and riprap; tiny jigs or pieces of worm get steady action for kids. For a bigger bite, target channel catfish near drop-offs at dusk with cut bait or stink baits. After a rain, slightly stained water can improve the crankbait bite; on clear, calm days, downsize and go more natural.

Top tip: Follow the wind—fish the banks the wind is pushing into, and match local shad with white or shad-pattern flukes, spinnerbaits, or 1/4-oz squarebills.
