Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 10:2 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Bathurst

Bathurst fishing is built around the Macquarie River, its tributary creeks and a network of productive farm dams and storages scattered through the Central Tablelands. Freshwater anglers can realistically plan trips focused on Murray cod, golden perch (yellowbelly), redfin and stocked trout, with the bonus of yabbies and carp for those chasing a feed or just steady action.

The Macquarie River through Bathurst is classic central-west cod and yella water: long pools, deep outside bends, rock bars and plenty of snags. In late spring and throughout summer, Murray cod are the main drawcard. Work the heavier structure at first and last light with medium to large hardbodies, wakebaits and surface paddlers. Focus on shadowed banks, undercut edges and obvious log jams; position yourself slightly upstream and cast past the structure so your lure tracks tight along it on the retrieve.

Golden perch peak in spring and early autumn as the water sits in the high-teens to low-20s. They favour slower edges, eddies below riffles and the heads and tails of deep holes. Compact spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits and small soft plastics hopped down the drop-offs are the main producers. In dirtier water, choose rattling lures in dark or gold patterns and slow your retrieve right down, pausing often to let the lure sink back into the strike zone.

Through winter, cod slow but are still catchable for patient anglers who fish deeper holding water. Upsize your lures, use neutrally buoyant or slow-sinking hardbodies and count them down before starting a very slow roll just off the bottom. Target the deepest bends, rock walls and any section with noticeable depth change; this is when a sounder in a kayak or car-topper tinny gives you a real edge.

Trout fishing around Bathurst is centred on cooler creeks and stocked impoundments. Rainbow and brown trout respond well in autumn and early spring when water clarity is best. In streams, fish small inline spinners, tiny hardbodies or lightly weighted flies such as Woolly Buggers and nymphs. Cast upstream, keep a low profile and cover every seam, undercut and bubble line; the water can be skinny and fish are easily spooked.

Local farm dams and small reservoirs are valuable options, especially for families. Many hold redfin perch in big numbers, along with yabbies and, in some cases, stocked cod, silver perch or trout. For redfin, work small soft plastics, vibes or blade lures around the old creek bed, weed edges and any standing timber. Once you find a school, stay put; redfin often stack tightly and multiple fish will come from the same patch if you keep your lure in their face.

Bait fishers do well across the region. In the Macquarie and nearby dams, use live or fresh shrimp, worms, small yabbies or scrub worms. Fish them on a simple running sinker or paternoster rig, keeping sinkers just heavy enough to hold bottom without sliding into snags. Set baits tight to structure for cod and perch, and a little wider out over open flats if you are chasing numbers of redfin or carp.

Pragmatically, success around Bathurst comes from reading the water and adjusting to conditions. After rain and rising flows, concentrate on eddies and backwaters where fish shelter out of the main current. In clear, low water, downsize leaders and lures, lengthen casts and fish the low-light windows. With that flexible approach, the Bathurst area delivers productive freshwater fishing almost year-round.

The Best Fishing Spots around Bathurst

Macquarie River

Running through Bathurst, the Macquarie River is a staple for local anglers targeting Murray cod, golden perch, carp, and seasonal redfin; shallow runs and deeper pools fish best at first light and dusk, with spring and early summer producing active cod on surface lures and spinnerbaits while winter rewards patient bait anglers in the deeper holes.

Ben Chifley Dam

Just southeast of Bathurst, Ben Chifley Dam offers open-water fishing for golden perch, redfin, and occasional Murray cod, with trolling hardbodies along the old river bed and rocky points productive in spring–summer, and bank fishing with yabbies or worms effective around flooded timber after rain.

Lake Wyangala

Downstream near Wyangala, this large impoundment is renowned for Murray cod, golden perch, and carp, with summer evening surface sessions for cod a highlight; slow-rolling soft plastics or vibes around rocky points and standing timber in spring and autumn consistently finds active yellas.

Lake Windamere

Near Rylstone, Lake Windamere is famous for big golden perch and plentiful redfin; work edges and submerged trees with lipless crankbaits and soft vibes in spring, then troll or slow-roll plastics over flats through summer, with early and late low-light periods best.

Lake Burrendong

A vast storage near Wellington, Lake Burrendong holds strong populations of golden perch, Murray cod, and redfin; target windblown banks and points in spring, transition to deeper timber with blades and vibes in summer, and fish slow in autumn when schools hold off drop-offs.

Lake Oberon

At Oberon, this cool-climate lake is a go-to for rainbow trout and brown trout, with powerbaiting or worms productive from shore in winter–spring and trolling tassie devils or winged lures effective along the tree lines and creek arms when fish are cruising.

Turon River

Flowing past Sofala and Hill End, the Turon River features clear riffles and pools that suit light spinning and fly for brown trout and rainbow trout; small hardbodies, spinners, and nymphs excel in autumn and spring when flows are stable and water clarity is high.

Lake Canobolas

Near Orange, Lake Canobolas is a family-friendly fishery regularly producing rainbow trout, with redfin a common bycatch; early morning and late afternoon see trout cruising the edges for small spoons and flies, while deeper daytime sessions suit soft plastics for schooling reddies.

Lake Wallace

At Wallerawang, Lake Wallace offers accessible banks and launching for rainbow trout, brown trout, and redfin; work the weed edges with small minnow lures and blades during low light, and probe deeper pockets with soft plastics and bait when the sun is high.

Fish River

Rising in the high country east of O’Connell, the Fish River provides cool, clear runs ideal for light tackle or fly targeting brown trout and rainbow trout; focus on undercut banks and riffle tails in autumn–spring with small spinners, shallow cranks, or bead-head nymphs.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
