On the Leichhardt River and smaller creeks, focus on rock bars, outside bends, logjams and pools below small rapids. Cast upstream and retrieve lures back with the current, keeping them tight to structure. Compact hardbodies, small spinnerbaits and weedless-rigged plastics are effective in snaggy reaches. Spangled perch, sleepy cod and sooty grunter are common by-catch and are easily tempted with small soft plastics hopped along the bottom or baits such as prawn pieces and worms.

Effective techniques around Mount Isa include trolling, casting and bait fishing. Trolling deep and medium divers along major points and drop-offs is a reliable way to cover water and locate active barra, especially for visiting anglers learning the dams. Once you find fish or bait on the sounder, switch to casting to thoroughly work the area. At night, concentrate on well-lit banks, rocky edges and pressure points; slow, steady retrieves with rattling hardbodies often out-fish erratic presentations.
