Fishing Overview Loxton

Loxton sits on a gentle bend of the Murray River in South Australia’s Riverland, and its mix of deep channels, snag-lined banks and quiet backwaters makes it a reliable fishing base. With multiple boat ramps, bank-access spots and nearby creeks and lagoons, anglers can target Murray cod, golden perch (often called callop locally), redfin and plentiful carp almost any month of the year.

Seasonally, late spring through autumn is prime time for native species. As water temperatures rise from October, golden perch begin to move and respond well to lures cast tight to timber and drop-offs. The warmest months of December to February are productive for Murray cod around heavily structured banks and rock bars, especially early and late in the day. In the cooler months, the bite slows but persistent anglers using bait in deeper holes still pick up callop and the odd cod, while carp fishing remains consistent right through winter.

The main Murray channel at Loxton is relatively broad with well-defined outside bends, where undercut banks, fallen red gums and rock edges create classic cod and callop habitat. Focus on these high-flow edges with heavy timber: cod often hold tight to large snags, while golden perch roam the edges and adjacent drop-offs. Behind sandbars and along inside bends, slower backwaters and small bay-like pockets hold schools of carp, bony bream and the occasional redfin, and are ideal spots for relaxed bait fishing from the bank.

For lure anglers, trolling hard-bodied lures that dive to 3–6 metres along the deeper bends is a staple Murray cod tactic around Loxton. A famous anabranch of the Murray in the Riverland, Katarapko Creek meanders through red gum flats and produces golden perch, Murray cod, and redfin around timber snags and narrow runs; trolling hardbodies or working soft vibes around the deeper holes is effective year-round, with early morning surface strikes in summer, and easy shore access from campgrounds plus quiet kayak drifts compared with the busier main river—close to Murray River and Banrock Lagoon.

Lake Bonney

Lake Bonney at Barmera is a big, wind-affected basin popular for family sessions targeting carp (great for kids), occasional redfin, and seasonal yabbies along the edges; try evening bait fishing from the foreshore or slow-trolling the drop-offs by kayak on calmer days, and use the lake as a change-up when the river flow is high—handy to Berri and Gurra Gurra Lake for a multi-spot day.

Pyap Lagoon

Sheltered and weedy, Pyap Lagoon sits just downstream of Loxton and fishes well for golden perch around warm months, with carp and redfin common; shore anglers can work the reed edges with worms or shrimp, while small craft can flick spinnerbaits and soft plastics tight to timber where baitfish congregate—an easy alternative to the main Murray River when wind or ski traffic picks up.

Flowing through floodplain country, Mundic Creek is a reliable producer of golden perch and Murray cod around logjams and deeper holes; work lures slowly along current seams, or soak shrimp and yabbies from shaded banks, with carp ever-present—link it with a drift through Pike River or a poke into Bookmark Creek for variety.
