Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Albany
Albany sits on a productive stretch of Southern Ocean coastline, with King George Sound, Princess Royal Harbour and nearby coastal beaches all delivering reliable fishing. The mix of sheltered estuary-style water and exposed ocean means you can usually find somewhere fishable regardless of swell or wind. Planning revolves around matching your target species to Albany’s strong seasonal patterns and varied habitat.
In autumn and winter, Australian salmon dominate the surf gutters along Middleton Beach, Nanarup, Cheynes, Gull Rock and the broader south coast. Look for milky green water and working birds, then cast metal slugs, stickbaits or pilchard baits into the whitewater. A long rod, 20–30 lb braid and a 30–40 lb leader help manage powerful fish in heavy shore break. Dawn, dusk and overcast days produce the most consistent salmon action.
Spring and summer favour King George whiting, squid and inshore reef species across King George Sound and around Emu Point. Drift sand patches adjacent to weed beds for whiting using light 4–8 lb gear, small long-shank hooks and baits like squid strip, pipi or coral prawn. For squid, work the same weed edges with 2.5–3.5 size jigs in natural colours on bright days and darker, high-contrast patterns in low light. Slow, erratic hops with pauses are critical in the clear Albany water.
Boat anglers find excellent reef fishing on broken ground and lumps off Bald Head, Breaksea Island and the wider shelf. Pink snapper, queensnapper, dhufish, harlequin fish and Samson fish hold on hard bottom with good current. Use your sounder to locate bait and structure rather than relying on marks alone. Slow-pitch jigs, soft plastics on 1–2 oz jigheads and paternoster rigs baited with squid, mulies or local cut bait all work well. Downsizing leaders and sinkers in calm, clear conditions often increases bites.
Summer and early autumn also bring pelagic opportunities. Trolling deep-diving hardbodies, skirts and metal stickbaits along current lines and reef edges can turn up southern bluefin tuna, snook and the odd yellowtail kingfish. Keep a casting outfit rigged with a metal slug or stickbait to quickly reach surface bust-ups when birds suddenly start working.
Inside Princess Royal Harbour and the Kalgan River, focus on black bream, flathead and mulloway. Bream respond well to lightly weighted soft plastics, small hardbodies and baits like prawn or mullet strip pitched tight to structure, pontoons and rock walls. Flathead lie on sandy edges and drop-offs; slowly hop paddle-tail plastics or fish strip baits along the bottom. Mulloway are a more deliberate target—fish the deeper holes and channel edges at night with large live or fresh baits, paying attention to tide changes.
Land-based anglers have numerous rock and headland options around Albany. Platforms near Salmon Holes, Cable Beach and further east produce tailor, skippy, salmon, pink snapper and sharks when swell allows. Use solid footwear, long gaffs and fish only in safe conditions, casting whole baits or metals into the wash lines. A berley trail of crushed pilchards and pellets can pull skippy, herring and garfish close enough for light gear sport and great table fish.
Success in Albany comes from reading water and adapting quickly: chase salmon on moving schools during the cooler months, work shallow sand and weed for whiting and squid in the warmer season, and exploit calm windows to push wider for reef and pelagic species. With careful attention to weather, tide and structure, the region can produce quality fish on almost any day of the year.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 13 beaches and bays in this area.
