Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:26 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Fishing Overview Quinte West

Quinte West sits at a prime junction of the Bay of Quinte, the Trent River, and the Trent-Severn Waterway, giving anglers access to big-water walleye, river current bites, and sheltered back bays. The city’s launches and shorelines around Trenton, Glen Miller, and Frankford make it easy to target multiple species in a single day without long runs.

Seasonal patterns drive most fishing decisions here. In early spring, warming shallows and river mouths near Trenton and up the Trent draw pre-spawn walleye, pike, and panfish. Focus on creek inlets, marinas, and shallow flats with emerging weed growth, slow-rolling jigs and minnows or small swimbaits. As the water warms into late spring and early summer, bass season brings excellent smallmouth fishing on rocky points, shoals, and breakwalls from Trenton out toward Carrying Place, while largemouth stack in weedy bays, marinas, and slack-water pockets off the main river.

Through summer, walleye tend to slide deeper into the Bay of Quinte channels and edges of current seams along the Trent River. Trolling bottom bouncers with worm harnesses, or crankbaits just off bottom in 15–30 feet, covers water efficiently. Smallmouth respond well to drop-shot rigs, tubes, and ned-style baits on rock-to-sand transitions. Early and late in the day, work topwaters over shoals and along riprap shorelines for aggressive surface strikes.

Fall is when Quinte West earns its reputation for trophy walleye. Big fish push into the Bay of Quinte and main Trent channels, following baitfish as temperatures drop. Long, slow trolling passes after dark with deep-diving crankbaits along the main shipping channel edges, bridge approaches, and contour lines is a staple pattern. Keep lines well back and use precision trolling speeds; slight changes in speed or direction often trigger the better fish. At the same time, muskies roam weedlines and breaks; large jerkbaits and rubber baits along the Trent’s deeper outside bends can produce giants.

Winter brings ice fishing opportunities when conditions allow on protected bays and backwaters connected to the Bay of Quinte and the Trent system. Anglers target perch, walleye, and panfish using small spoons, tungsten jigs, and minnows. Focus on inside weed edges, subtle depressions, and travel routes between shallow feeding areas and deeper basins.

Habitat and tactical tips are highly location-specific in Quinte West. The Trent River offers classic river structure: current breaks, bridge pilings, eddies below dams like Glen Miller and Frankford, and deep holes. Use heavier jigs and vertical presentations to maintain bottom contact in current, and look for slight current seams that concentrate bait. On the Bay of Quinte side, concentrate on channel edges, mid-lake humps, and long tapering points. Use your electronics to mark bait schools, then adjust depth and trolling passes to stay just above the bait.

Boat anglers have the advantage of covering water, but shore fishing can be productive off public parks, piers, and bridge approaches around Trenton. Cast crankbaits, jigs, or live bait rigs into current breaks and along drop-offs. Across seasons, success in Quinte West comes from matching your approach to water temperature and clarity, and being willing to move between the Trent River’s current-driven fish and the Bay of Quinte’s roaming schools until you dial in the bite.

The Best Fishing Spots around Quinte West

Bay of Quinte

A renowned walleye fishery with excellent fall trolling for trophy walleye, plus strong summer action for largemouth/smallmouth bass, northern pike, and yellow perch. Vast shoals, weedlines, and current seams make it productive from Trenton through Belleville; boaters work deep edges and bays, while shore anglers score around municipal waterfronts and piers. Nearby waters like Telegraph Narrows and Big Bay are classic seasonal hotspots within the system.

Trent River

Flowing through Trenton into the Bay of Quinte, the river’s current breaks, eddies, and dam outflows hold walleye, smallmouth bass, muskellunge, and channel catfish. Spring and fall walleye runs draw heavy attention, while summer offers reliable bass and panfish. Boat anglers probe current seams and holes; shore access is plentiful near bridges and public waterfronts, with additional opportunities up toward Trent-Severn Waterway locks.

Presqu'ile Bay

Sheltered waters near Brighton with expansive weedbeds ideal for largemouth bass, plus northern pike, perch, and seasonal smallmouth bass roaming edges and points. Early summer weed growth concentrates fish, while fall sees bait stack near drop-offs. Boats fan out across flats and channels; shore anglers work park shoreline and marina areas, with nearby Presqu'ile Point and Brighton Harbour offering complementary options.

Moira River

Entering the Bay of Quinte at Belleville, this river provides mixed current and slack-water habitat for walleye, smallmouth bass, pike, and seasonal trout movements. Spring and fall walleye draws are well known, while summer topwater for smallmouth can be excellent around rocky runs. Shore access is strong near the downtown waterfront, with additional boat access to the lower river and adjoining Belleville Harbour.

Telegraph Narrows

A constricted reach of the Bay of Quinte that funnels bait and predators, famed for fall walleye trolling along the channel edges and breaks. Summer brings roaming smallmouth bass and occasional pike on adjacent points and shoals. Boats track subtle depth changes and current lines, while limited shore access can still intercept moving fish; nearby Big Bay and Hay Bay complement seasonal patterns.

Belleville Harbour

A protected harbour at the mouth of the Moira River offering accessible shorelines and marina edges for perch, walleye, and panfish, with pike ambushing along weedlines. Spring and late fall shine for walleye as bait congregates, while summer provides steady mixed-bag action. Boaters slip into the harbour to work edges before fanning out into the Bay; shore anglers benefit from piers, parks, and adjacent Zwick’s Park frontage.

Big Bay

A broad indentation on the north shore of Prince Edward County within the Bay of Quinte, known for walleye runs during cool-water periods and smallmouth bass along rocky transitions. Weed edges hold pike and perch through summer. Trollers trace the basin contours and channel edges, while shore opportunities exist at select public pull-offs; its proximity to Telegraph Narrows creates a productive seasonal circuit.

Murray Canal

Connecting the Bay of Quinte to Lake Ontario near Carrying Place, this linear waterway features bridge abutments, walls, and gentle current that attract largemouth bass, pike, and panfish. Spring and early summer see strong shallow bites along emergent weeds, with consistent action around structure all season. Shore access near swing bridges is popular; small boats and kayaks pick apart edges, and nearby Weller’s Bay rounds out the area.

Weller's Bay

A shallow, weedy bay west of Carrying Place that’s a classic largemouth bass and northern pike venue, with perch and sunfish abundant in weed pockets. Summer peak occurs around lush vegetation and channels; early fall can deliver steady pike action as bait moves. Boats work lily lines, reeds, and cuts, while limited public shore spots and launches provide access, with quick runs into Murray Canal and the open Lake Ontario.

Presqu'ile Point

A prominent point on Lake Ontario known for current and wind-driven bait concentrations that attract roaming smallmouth bass, seasonal trout/salmon nearshore passes, and occasional pike. Shore anglers target rocky spits and breaks, while boats circle contour lines and drop-offs. Late spring through fall sees the most consistent activity, and nearby Presqu’ile Bay offers calmer-water alternatives when wind rises.
