Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Gloucester
Gloucester fishing is dominated by the River Severn and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, giving anglers a mix of powerful tidal river and wide, deep ship canal within a short drive of the city. The Severn around Gloucester is famous for hard-fighting barbel and chunky chub, while the canal has become a noted venue for zander, pike and big shoals of bream and roach. Understanding how tides, boat traffic and water clarity interact is the key to consistent results.
On the River Severn near Gloucester, barbel and chub are the main targets from late spring through autumn. The best areas are crease lines below bends, broken gravel runs and the tails of deeper holes. In summer, barbel respond well to heavy baiting with pellets and hemp, fished with robust feeder or straight-lead rigs and 10β12 lb mainline. Low, clear water calls for smaller hooks and longer hooklengths, with meat, 8β10 mm pellets or caster-and-maggot cocktails effective. Evening into dark is prime time, especially on sultry, stable-weather days.
Chub in this stretch love tight casts to cover: overhanging trees, downstream brambles and man-made structures such as bridge pillars and moorings. In coloured water, cheesepaste, bread flake and meat score well; in clear conditions scale down to lighter hooklengths and single maggot or small pellets. Roach, dace and small hybrids show in numbers on steadier glides; a 3β4 g stick float or bolo rig run down the flow with loose-fed maggots or hemp is a classic Gloucester approach when the river is within its banks and carrying a touch of colour.
The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal provides a totally different challenge: slow, deep water that responds well to accurate feeding and patient fishing. Bream, skimmers and roach form the bulk of catches. Pole and waggler tactics both work, but depth must be plumbed carefully because the canal often reaches 4β6 m. Groundbait-based approaches with micro pellets, dead maggots and chopped worm pick out better fish. On still, mild days, feeding a long pole line at 11β13 m and a shorter top-kit-plus-one line gives options as light levels change and boat traffic increases.
Predator fishing is a major draw in Gloucester. The canal, plus some of the slower Severn cuts, hold impressive pike and zander. In cooler months, lure fishing with shads, paddle tails and slim jigging lures fished close to the bottom is very effective. Work along moored boats, bridges, turning basins and marinas where baitfish shoal up. In coloured water after rain, use lures with strong vibration and bright or contrasty patterns. When visibility improves, more natural colours and subtle presentations score. Deadbaits such as roach, smelt and coarse fish sections remain reliable, especially in winter when predators sit in deeper holes and along the shelf.
Seasonally, late winter and early spring can be patchy on the river as levels fluctuate, but the canal often remains consistent for roach, skimmers and predators. Late spring sees the Severn come into its own for barbel and chub as water temperatures rise and insect life increases. Summer offers top sport at dawn and dusk on both river and canal, with surface activity from roach and chub and improved lure visibility for predators. Autumn is arguably the peak time in Gloucester: stable flows, coloured water and active fish, making it ideal for specimen barbel and big canal zander. Through all seasons, success comes from reading the water: watching for bubbles, fry dimpling, colour changes and flow lines, then tailoring rigs and feed precisely to the spot.
