Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.
7 Day Fishing Weather
Fishing Overview Halifax
Halifax sits in a prime spot for West Yorkshire coarse and game fishing, with a mix of reservoirs, club ponds, canals and rivers all within a short drive. The main focus for many anglers is the Calder & Hebble Navigation and the River Calder, backed up by well-stocked commercials and upland reservoirs where carp and silver fish dominate catches. The variety of venues means there is always somewhere producing fish, whatever the weather or season.
On the Calder & Hebble through Brighouse, Elland and Sowerby Bridge, you’ll find classic Yorkshire canal fishing. Roach, skimmers, perch and the odd bream shoal respond well to pole or waggler tactics over a bed of groundbait or soaked micros. In colder months, keep feed tight and minimal: single pinkie, maggot or a small expander pellet over a nugget of groundbait is often enough. Perch patrol the boat channels and moored craft; small drop-shot or jig presentations with 2–3 inch soft plastics produce the better stamp of fish.
The River Calder offers chub, barbel, dace, grayling and trout in places, with pike lurking in slower, deeper runs. Summer tactics revolve around float or feeder fishing with maggots, casters and pellets. Target crease lines and the tails of pools, especially where tributary streams enter and add oxygen. In autumn and winter, step up to a block-end feeder with bread, meat or pellet for chub and barbel, and look for steadier water under overhanging trees, bridges and along outside bends.
Halifax is also ringed by commercial stillwaters and club ponds holding carp, F1s, bream and tench. Pole at 6–13 metres with pellets, corn and soft hookers dominates match-style fishing, while method feeders or hybrid feeders score well on the longer lines. In warmer months, carp cruise the upper layers; shallow slapping, pellet wagglers and margin fishing with corn or meat are prime tactics late in the day. On pressured venues, scale down to lighter lines and smaller hooks, and feed micros or 4mm pellets little and often to keep fish grazing in your swim.
Local reservoirs around Halifax and the nearby moors can be more challenging but rewarding. Expect mixed bags of roach, bream and perch, with some waters also holding carp and pike. Wind direction is key: fish the bank the wind has been blowing onto for a day or two, where natural food collects. Long-range feeder fishing with groundbait and particles is often necessary; use a clipped-up distance and count the feeder down to keep presentation consistent on sloping shelves.
Throughout the year, adjust your approach to the conditions. In clear, low water or on bright days, drop hook sizes, thin down line diameters and switch to more natural baits like maggot, caster and worm. After rain or when colour pushes into the Calder or the canal, you can step up gear, introduce more feed and lean on pellets and meat. Wherever you fish around Halifax, a steady, thoughtful approach to feeding and an eye for features such as overhanging trees, moored boats, drop-offs and inflowing streams will consistently put you on better fish.
