Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 16:36 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Northampton

Northampton fishing is dominated by the River Nene, the Grand Union Canal and a ring of old gravel pits and managed day-ticket lakes. Together they offer everything from fast-paced silverfish sport to specimen carp and winter predator fishing, all within a short drive of Northampton town centre.

On the River Nene around Northampton, expect classic lowland river fishing. In warmer months, target chub, barbel, roach and bream by focusing on bends, overhanging trees and any crease where pace changes. Ledgered meat, pellets or boilies pick out barbel and chub, while float-fished maggot or caster produces mixed bags of roach, dace and small chub in steadier glides. In summer low flows, scale down to lighter hooklengths and smaller hooks, feeding very small but frequent helpings of loose feed. After rain, switch to a heavier feeder with groundbait and chopped worm to combat extra colour and flow.

Through autumn and winter, the Nene becomes a strong predator fishing venue. Pike and zander patrol deeper holes, marinas and boat channels. Deadbaits such as roach or smelt fished on float or ledger rigs are reliable, with early morning and last light the key periods. On clearer days, try wobbling deadbaits or working small shads and jigged soft plastics along the bottom, especially on the edges of boat traffic lanes where baitfish congregate.

The Grand Union Canal sections near Northampton provide consistent canal-style fishing. Roach, skimmers, perch and F1 carp respond well to pole or waggler tactics. A narrow but accurate feed line of groundbait and micro pellets down the track, with a second line across or down the near shelf, covers you for changes in light and boat traffic. Use pinkies or maggots over a light groundbait mix in winter; in summer, introduce a few micro pellets and expanders to hold better stamp fish. Perch thrive around moored boats, bridges and any metalwork; fish worm or maggot right tight to features for the best results.

Northampton’s gravel pits and stillwaters cater for carp, tench, bream and catfish. In spring, target warming margins and shallower bays with method feeders, solid PVA bags and bright wafters. As weed growth thickens, locate clear spots using a marker rod or feeling the lead down, then fish short hooklinks and low-lying pop-ups to avoid debris. Early and late in the day are prime times for surface fishing with floaters on calmer pits. Tench respond best at first light to maggots and sweetcorn over particle and groundbait in slightly deeper margins.

In winter, slow down presentations and reduce feed on both pits and canals. Single hookbaits—small wafters, balanced corn or maggot hookbaits—over minimal free offerings often outfish heavy baiting. For predators, work the deeper areas and any noted shelves with deadbaits or lures, keeping mobile until you locate feeding fish. Match your approach to water clarity: brighter, rattling lures in coloured water and more natural, subtle patterns in clear pits.

Across the Northampton area, success comes from fishing tidily, feeding sparingly and always adapting to the specific character of the Nene, the canal, or each individual pit. Pay attention to wind direction, water colour and visible features, and refine rigs and feeding accordingly for consistently good results.
