Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.
7 Day Fishing Weather
Fishing Overview Rochdale
Rochdale sits in a useful position for anglers, with well-stocked commercials on the town’s outskirts, the Rochdale Canal running close by, and upland reservoirs towards the Pennines. Most local fishing is coarse and carp orientated, with predator and light game options within a short drive.
Commercial fisheries around Rochdale typically hold mixed stocks of carp, F1s, tench, bream and silvers. In the warmer months, carp dominate catches. Pellet waggler, method feeder and short-pole shallow rigs score well; feed micros or 4mm pellets and fish 6–8mm banded pellets or wafters. Early and late in the day, margin fishing with groundbait and corn or meat will often produce the biggest fish, especially in quieter corners away from traffic and footpaths.
Through late autumn and winter, these commercials switch to silver-fish sport. Scale down: 0.10–0.12mm hooklengths, size 18–20 hooks, single maggot or pinkie with tiny kinder pots of loose feed. Fish down the track in 5–7ft of water, keeping a slow, regular trickle of bait going. Bream and skimmers respond well to dark groundbait with a pinch of micros, while roach prefer hemp, caster and fluoro maggots.
The Rochdale Canal and connecting canal network give classic Northern canal fishing. Expect roach, perch, skimmers, the odd tench and decent pike in deeper pounds. Boat traffic is the main variable; fish a metre off the far shelf to avoid the worst of the disturbance. A 4x10–4x14 canal float, fine line and small hooks to maggot, pinkie or squat will take bites all year. Perch are a solid backup—fish worm or a small jighead with a 2–3in soft plastic along the pilings and moored boats.
For predators on the canal, travel light with a drop-shot or light jigging outfit. Concentrate on bridge holes, marinas and any inflows. Use 5–8lb fluorocarbon with a short wire trace where pike are present. Slow retrieves and frequent pauses work best in the cold, clear winter water.
Head out towards the Pennines and you’ll find reservoirs and upland waters used for both coarse and game fishing. On coarse-oriented reservoirs, long-range feeder tactics dominate. Use a 10–11ft feeder rod, 30–40g cage feeders and groundbait laced with micros, casting to visible features like points, drowned walls or the end of promontories. Bream and skimmers often sit at range, while roach and perch patrol closer to the bank over any weed or stone cover.
On trout- or mixed-fishery reservoirs, spinning with small spoons, spinners or 5–7cm plugs covers water quickly. In bright conditions, keep lures natural and fish deeper; in overcast or windy weather, try brighter patterns worked higher in the water. Shorelines with a bit of ripple and wind blowing in usually out-fish flat, calm banks.
Across Rochdale’s waters, travel light, use a trolley where banks are steep, and always watch for subtle features—overhanging bushes, moored boats, inflows and changes in bank construction. These micro-spots consistently hold better fish on both stillwaters and the canal network around the town.
