Fishing in Rotherham centres on the River Don, the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation, and a dense ring of commercial fisheries that are tuned to modern match and pleasure tactics. The town’s waters hold everything from fast-water barbel to delicate silverfish, with many venues designed for consistent sport in all but the worst weather.
The River Don around Rotherham is now a credible mixed fishery. Barbel and chub dominate the faster gravel runs, with roach, dace, perch and the odd pike in steadier glides. In warmer months, target barbel at dawn and dusk with meat, pellets or boilies presented on strong line and reliable running rigs close to cover or crease lines. Chub respond well to bread flake, cheesepaste or maggots trundled under a stick float, especially where overhanging trees or trailing brambles create shaded lies.
During autumn and winter, the Don comes into its own for roach, dace and perch. A 13–14 ft float rod, 0.10–0.12 mm hooklengths and single or double maggot will pick off bites when the water is clear and cold.
