Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 17:2 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Caernarfon

Caernarfon fishing centres on the productive Menai Strait and the exposed shores of Caernarfon Bay, giving shore and boat anglers a wide range of seasonal opportunities. The tidal flow, mixed ground and proximity of deep water mean you can catch everything from summer bass and smoothhound to winter codling and rays within a short drive of the town.

From late spring to early autumn, the Menai Strait and nearby surf beaches fish well for bass, smoothhound, rays and a variety of flatfish. Warm months see mackerel, garfish and scad pushing bait fish close in, especially around tide races and headlands, which in turn draws in bass and pollack. Autumn is prime time for rays and huss from the rockier ground, and as water temperatures drop further, whiting, codling and flounder dominate catches on cleaner sand marks.

Caernarfon gives access to three key habitat types: the fast-flowing Menai Strait, the open surf beaches of Caernarfon Bay, and rough ground rock marks and reefs. The Strait itself offers sheltered but highly tidal fishing; focus on eddies, bends and channel edges where food naturally funnels. Surf beaches towards Dinas Dinlle and beyond provide classic shallow, sandy bass and ray ground. Rocky points and broken ground marks, accessible by boat or from selected shoreline spots, are ideal for conger, bull huss and specimen rays.

For shore anglers, simple but efficient rigs catch the most fish. On the sandy beaches, use a clipped-down one or two-hook pulley or loop rig with 3–5oz grip leads to hold in the tide. Baits such as lugworm, ragworm, crab and sandeel cover most targets; peeler crab is top for bass and smoothhound, while sandeel, bluey or mackerel strip score well for rays and dogs. In the Strait, downsize to lighter leads when possible and fish streamlined rigs to reduce drag from the flow.

Boat fishing out of Caernarfon and nearby marinas opens up deeper marks where tope, conger, big rays and pollack are realistic prospects in season. Anchor over mixed or rough ground with strong uptide or running ledger rigs, using whole mackerel, squid or large fish baits to pick out better fish. On neap tides, drifting the edges of reefs with shads, metal jigs or baited flowing traces can be deadly for pollack, coalfish and gurnards.

Tide timing is critical around Caernarfon. In the Strait, target the period from an hour before slack to a couple of hours into the new run; the water is more manageable and fish move to feed along channel slopes and structure. On the beaches, look for a building surf and fish the flooding tide, particularly the last two hours up to high water at dawn or dusk for bass and rays. Use a headlamp and reflective markers on your tripod at night, because much of the best fishing takes place after dark.

Water clarity and wind direction also influence results. A light onshore breeze that colours the water slightly can transform bass fishing along Caernarfon Bay, while clear, calm conditions often favour scratching tactics with small hooks and worm baits for flounder, dab and school bass in the Strait. Carry a selection of rigs, vary your casting distances until you locate fish-holding gutters or channels, and keep mobile: small positional changes often make the difference between a quiet session and a busy one around Caernarfon.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 5 beaches and bays in this area.
