Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:25 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Florence

Fishing in Florence, Oregon centers on the Siuslaw River, its estuary, the Pacific surf, and a cluster of productive dune lakes just minutes from town. This mix of saltwater and freshwater habitat gives anglers options in every season, whether you’re targeting fall Chinook salmon, winter steelhead, spring trout, or summer bass and surf perch.

Seasonal patterns are key. Fall is dominated by Chinook salmon in the Siuslaw River and estuary, with fish staging near Florence and pushing upriver on every rain pulse. Coho salmon also appear in some nearby lakes as stocked or naturalized runs. Winter brings steelhead into the Siuslaw and its tributaries, with peak fishing typically mid-winter when river flows stabilize. Spring is prime time for stocked rainbow trout in lakes like Cleawox, Siltcoos, and Woahink, alongside resident cutthroat trout in the river system. Summer shifts the focus to surf perch in the breakers, rockfish and lingcod off the jetties or via charter, and warmwater species like largemouth bass, yellow perch, and panfish in the dune lakes.

Habitat types around Florence demand different tactics. The Siuslaw estuary, from the Pacific up past Old Town Florence, features deep channels, flats, and edges where salmon hold and feed. Upstream river sections offer steelhead and cutthroat holding in tailouts, current seams, and travel lanes behind boulders. Coastal dune lakes south and north of Florence have weedlines, submerged timber, and shallow flats that attract bass, panfish, and stocked trout. On the saltwater side, the North and South Jetties, nearby reefs, and open beaches provide structure and current breaks for rockfish, surf perch, and occasional lingcod.

Common techniques vary by target. For Siuslaw fall Chinook, popular methods include trolling herring or spinners in the estuary, or back-bouncing eggs and sand shrimp in the river channel. During winter steelhead season, anglers drift fish or bobber-dog soft beads, jigs, and bait, or swing spoons and spinners through prime runs. In the dune lakes, trout respond well to PowerBait, small spinners, and trolling wedding rings or small wobblers along drop-offs. Largemouth bass anglers focus on morning and evening topwater around reeds and laydowns, then switch to soft plastics or jigs along deeper weed edges as the sun rises.

Surf and jetty fishing near Florence are extremely productive with simple gear. For surf perch, work sandy beaches at moderate surf with a high-low rig, 2–3 oz pyramid sinker, and sand shrimp or GULP! sandworms. Target troughs and cuts in the breakers, especially on a rising tide. On the jetties, medium-heavy tackle with 20–30 lb braid, a dropper loop rig, and bait like herring, anchovies, or squid will tempt rockfish, greenling, and the occasional lingcod. Metal jigs and swimbaits hopped close to the rocks are deadly when current is manageable.

Tactical tips for Florence include timing your trips around tides and river flows. In the estuary, many anglers focus on the last of the incoming and the first part of the outgoing tide for salmon. For surf perch, smaller surf and an incoming tide generally improve bite windows. In the lakes, pay attention to wind; fish the wind-blown bank where plankton and baitfish stack up, and adjust depth with slip bobbers or weighted rigs until you find active fish. Year-round, Florence rewards anglers who stay mobile, cover water, and adapt presentations to changing coastal conditions.
