Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Selma
Fishing in Selma, Alabama revolves around the Alabama River, its oxbows, and feeder creeks, which together offer a diverse fishery with year-round action. The mix of deep channel, outside bends, sandbars, and flooded timber gives anglers multiple patterns to work, whether they’re targeting bass, big river catfish, or slab crappie.
Seasonal patterns on the Alabama River near Selma are fairly distinct. In late winter and early spring, bass and crappie push into backwater sloughs, creek arms, and protected pockets as water temperatures climb into the 50s and low 60s. This is prime time to work slow-moving soft plastics for bass and tightline or use small jigs for crappie around wood and brush. By late spring and early summer, fish slide back toward the main river, relating to current breaks, ledges, and channel swings. Summer brings strong current-driven patterns: bass stack on riprap, wing dikes, and the downstream sides of points, while catfish feed heavily along the main channel edges and deep holes. Fall sees baitfish migrating into creeks and coves; shad-based patterns shine, with crankbaits and spinnerbaits excellent for bass and schooling white or striped bass. Winter fishing focuses on deeper bends and holes, with slow vertical presentations and soaking cut bait for catfish.
Key habitat types include the main river channel, outside bends with deeper scour holes, sandbars, rock banks, and numerous backwater sloughs. Look for visible current seams where fast and slow water meet; these edges concentrate bass and feeding cats. Submerged timber, blowdowns, and laydowns along the bank are consistent holding spots for largemouth bass, crappie, and bream. At creek mouths, especially after a rain, slightly stained inflow often sparks feeding activity from multiple species.
Productive techniques for bass around Selma start with medium-diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs worked along rock, wood, and current breaks. In clearer, calmer backwaters, Texas-rigged and wacky-rigged worms, creature baits, and jigs excel around stumps and laydowns. During low light, topwaters like walking baits and buzzbaits can produce explosive strikes on shallow flats adjacent to deeper water. For crappie, small tube jigs, marabou jigs, or minnows fished under a float around brush piles and submerged treetops are reliable. Vertical jigging over deeper brush near channel drops is effective in colder months.
Catfish tactics are straightforward but benefit from precise boat positioning. Target deep outside bends, the base of ledges, and scour holes below points or man-made current breaks. Use cut shad, skipjack, or chicken-based baits on slip-sinker or three-way rigs with enough weight to hold bottom in current. Anchor just upstream of the structure and fan-cast baits to cover multiple depth zones. Night fishing in summer can be especially productive along channel edges and shallow flats adjacent to deep water.
Practical tips include watching water level and current; stronger flow generally positions fish tighter to cover and breaks, while low, clear water calls for lighter line and more finesse. Humminbird or similar electronics help quickly locate ledges, brush, and baitfish schools. In muddy conditions, shift to darker, bulkier lures with vibration and add scent for both gamefish and catfish. Focus on intersections—where creeks meet the river, where rock meets sand, or where current meets slack water—as these transition zones consistently hold Selma’s most catchable fish.
