Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:16 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Florence

Florence, Oregon fishing is defined by the Siuslaw River, its estuary, and a cluster of highly productive coastal lakes just minutes from town. Anglers can switch from trolling for salmon, to jigging rockfish, to casting for stocked trout all in the same weekend. The key is understanding how seasons, tides, and water levels shuffle fish between ocean, bay, and freshwater.

Spring fishing around Florence starts with trout and bass in the nearby lakes—Siltcoos, Woahink, Cleawox, and Munsel. These lakes are regularly stocked with hatchery rainbows, and early in the season fish hold close to bank-accessible points and shallow drop-offs. Small spinners, 1/8–1/4 oz spoons, and floating dough baits under sliding sinkers are reliable. As water warms, target largemouth bass along reed lines, docks, and timber with soft plastics and topwater plugs in the evenings.

By late spring and early summer, attention shifts to the Siuslaw River estuary and ocean access. Bottomfish like black rockfish, greenling, and lingcod concentrate near the North Jetty, rockpiles, and reefs just outside the bar. When ocean conditions are safe, small boats and kayaks work 2–5 oz lead-head jigs tipped with curly-tail grubs or metal jigs bounced near the bottom. From the jetty, heavy surf rods, 2–4 oz pyramid sinkers, and bait such as sand shrimp or strips of herring put fish within reach. Work the ends of incoming and early outgoing tides for less current and cleaner water.

Surfperch fishing is a standout summer option on the beaches north and south of Florence. Look for cuts and deeper troughs in the surf; these slots funnel food and concentrate fish. Use 9–10 ft surf rods with 2–3 oz pyramid weights, high–low rigs, and sand shrimp, clam necks, or sand crabs. Soft plastic sandworm imitations on small Carolina rigs are deadly when slowly dragged across the bottom during a moderate incoming tide.

Fall is prime time for Chinook and coho salmon in the Siuslaw. Trollers work the bay from the Hwy 101 bridge down toward the jetties with plug-cut herring behind 2–8 oz of lead or in-line sinkers, adjusting to keep baits near the lower half of the water column. In colored water, add chartreuse or green flashers; in clearer conditions, stick with more natural finishes. Upriver, back-trolling plugs like Kwikfish or wobbling lures through deeper travel lanes and tailouts can be extremely effective when fish pause on their migration.

Winter brings steelhead into the Siuslaw and its tributaries. Focus on classic holding water: walking-speed current, 3–8 ft deep with boulders or ledges. From the bank, drift fishing with pencil lead and yarn, or bobber-dogging soft beads and jigs, puts your presentation in front of traveling fish. Boat anglers cover long drifts, systematically working each seam and inside bend, especially after a rainfall as flows begin to drop and clear.

Year-round, the estuary and lower river hold searun cutthroat trout, perch species, and occasional sturgeon. Light spinning gear with 6–8 lb line, small spinners, and natural baits will pick off a mix of species around pilings, marina edges, and channel breaks. For crabbing, concentrate near the lower bay and along channel edges, using baited pots and allowing ample soak time on slack and slower tides. By matching your tactics to season and water type, Florence offers productive fishing options 12 months a year.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
