Fishing Overview Kingman

Fishing around Kingman, Arizona revolves around big-water reservoirs and desert river fisheries, with most serious angling focused on nearby Lake Mohave, Lake Mead, and the Colorado River corridor. These waters are reachable in roughly an hour from town and give Kingman anglers consistent action for stripers, largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, and seasonal trout. The arid climate keeps warmwater species active for much of the year, with winter bringing prime striped bass and trout fishing.

Seasonal patterns here are defined by water temperature and stratification. From late February through April, bass and panfish push shallow to stage and spawn on gravel flats, protected coves, and backs of creek arms. This is the time for weightless plastics, Texas-rigged worms, and small jigs worked slowly around brush and rock transitions. By May and June, post-spawn bass slide to secondary points, ledges, and the first major break into 15–30 feet of water; deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and drop-shots shine. Summer in the desert pushes fish even deeper during the day—focus on 25–50 feet with jigs, spoons, and finesse rigs, then move shallow at dawn, dusk, and after dark.

Striped bass are a key draw on Lake Mohave and Lake Mead. In cooler months (November–March), schools move shallower, often pushing shad to the surface. Watch for bird activity and surface boils; when you find them, cast soft plastic swimbaits, chrome spoons, or topwaters into the chaos and work them quickly back. In summer, target stripers deep along old river channels and main-lake points. Vertical jigging spoons, heavy soft plastics on 1–1.5 oz jigheads, or live shad where allowed are the most reliable producers. Night fishing with submersible lights near marinas and steep walls can be outstanding when boat traffic is high.

Catfish around Kingman are most active from late spring through early fall. Work the upper ends of coves, river inlets, and any area with a bit of current or depth change. Channel cats prefer cut shad, anchovies, or prepared stink baits on simple slip-sinker rigs. Flatheads and larger blues demand live bait—sunfish or small carp—fished tight to boulders, submerged timber, or rocky ledges after dark. Heavy gear, abrasion-resistant leaders, and rod holders are essential in these snaggy, rock-strewn environments.

Trout and panfish add variety. Stocked rainbow trout are typically found in cooler months, especially near tailwater zones and select community waters within a reasonable drive of Kingman. Key tactical tips for this region start with sun and wind management. Early and late are almost always better than mid-day, especially in summer. Use quality electronics to locate bait schools, submerged humps, and drops; most productive spots are not obvious from the surface. In clear desert water, downsize line—8–12 lb fluorocarbon for most bass work—and keep colors natural: shad, green pumpkin, and smoke are standards. When wind pushes into a rocky point or shoreline, fish it aggressively with crankbaits and swimbaits—wind often triggers the best bite of the day.

Boat access opens the full potential of the Kingman-area fisheries, but determined shore anglers can do well by focusing on marinas, fishing piers, steeper rocky banks, and areas near river inflows. Pack polarized glasses, plenty of water, and be prepared to cover water until you intersect bait and structure; in these vast desert reservoirs, location is always the most important lure in your box.
