Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Van Buren
Fishing in Van Buren, Arkansas centers on the Arkansas River and its pool created by Lock & Dam 13, plus a network of creeks, oxbows, and nearby small impoundments. Anglers here target bass, catfish, crappie, and panfish almost 12 months a year, adjusting to river flows and water clarity. Understanding current, structure, and seasonal movements is the key to consistent success around Van Buren.
Spring is prime time. Rising water and warming temperatures push largemouth, spotted, and smallmouth bass shallow into backwaters, side channels, and flooded brush. Spinnerbaits, vibrating jigs, and square-bill crankbaits in shad or chartreuse patterns produce in stained river water, while soft-plastic creature baits and stick worms pitched to visible cover excel in clearer sloughs. Crappie stage on brush piles, laydowns, and riprap along the river edge; small tube jigs or minnows set just above the brush are extremely effective when fished vertically from a boat or from accessible banks.
As the Arkansas River warms into early summer, bass slide to current breaks—wing dikes, rock points, bridge pilings, and the heads and tails of islands. Focus on eddies and seams where current softens. Deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and football jigs dragged across rock are reliable river patterns, especially early and late in the day. Channel and blue catfish bite well on cut shad, skipjack, or prepared baits fished on sliding sinker rigs in outside bends, scour holes below wing dikes, and at the head of holes where current rolls over a drop.
By mid-summer, stable levels and heavy boat traffic push fish into deeper holding areas. Early morning and after-dark trips are high-percentage windows. Work topwaters along riprap and shallow points at first light for aggressive bass, then back off to deeper shell beds and channel ledges with crankbaits and big worms as the sun climbs. For flathead catfish, present live sunfish or small carp around thick cover—snags, rock piles, and undercut banks—anchoring upstream so your baits drift naturally into the structure.
Fall fishing around Van Buren can be excellent as baitfish migrate into creeks and backwater pockets. White bass, hybrid stripers, and smaller striped bass often push shad to the surface near channel drops and tributary mouths; watch for birds and surface busts, then cast chrome spoons, tail-spinners, or small swimbaits through the activity. Bass follow the same forage. Cover water with medium crankbaits and swimbaits until you locate schooling fish, then slow down with jigs or finesse plastics.
Winter doesn’t shut fishing down; it just concentrates fish. Look for deeper holes on sharp bends, the down-current side of rock structure, and inside turns adjacent to flats. Slowly worked jigs and blade baits will pick off sluggish bass, drum, and the occasional walleye or sauger. Catfish stack in the deepest river holes—use heavier weights to keep baits pinned to bottom in cold-current conditions and give each spot more time before moving.
Throughout the year, success around Van Buren hinges on reading the river: identify current breaks, depth changes, and hard cover, then match lure size and color to water clarity. Keep a mix of moving baits for covering water and slower presentations for picking apart key spots, and you can stay on fish in every season along this productive stretch of the Arkansas River.
