A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing in Redding, California centers on the Lower Sacramento River, Shasta Lake, and a cluster of productive lakes and rivers within an hour’s drive. Redding’s mild climate and cold tailwater releases below Shasta Dam create genuine year-round fishing, with peak action rotating seasonally between trout, bass, salmon, and panfish.
Seasonal patterns around Redding start with outstanding winter and early spring trout fishing on the Lower Sacramento. Stable flows and consistent water temps keep rainbow trout active even in January and February; nymphing with small mayfly and caddis imitations or tiny soft plastics under indicators is the staple approach. Spring brings increasing insect activity and stronger trout bites, while Shasta Lake and nearby reservoirs see spotted and smallmouth bass push shallow to stage and spawn, making reaction baits, small swimbaits, and finesse plastics highly effective.
By summer, Shasta Lake becomes a multi-species destination. Landlocked king salmon and kokanee concentrate over deep, cooler water; trolling with downriggers, dodgers, and small hoochies or spoons in 40–90 feet is the standard pattern. At the same time, spotted and smallmouth bass feed on offshore bait schools—target points, island tops, and submerged creek channels with drop-shots, jig heads, and topwater early and late in the day. The Lower Sacramento continues to fish well at dawn and dusk, with caddis hatches driving evening surface activity for dry-fly anglers and indicator nymphing producing steady mid-day action.
Fall is a highlight in Redding. The Lower Sacramento sees powerful runs of larger rainbow trout keying on salmon eggs, creating some of the heaviest trout of the year. Egg-pattern nymphs paired with small mayfly nymphs, fished from a drift boat, are the dominant strategy. On Shasta Lake and nearby Trinity Lake, cooling water draws baitfish shallower, and bass follow; reaction baits like jerkbaits, underspins, and spinnerbaits shine along wind-blown banks, while jigs and Ned rigs clean up pressured fish.
Primary habitats include the broad, deep riffles and runs of the Lower Sacramento River through downtown Redding, the massive open-water basin and steep canyon arms of Shasta Lake, and smaller foothill reservoirs with rocky shorelines. - When targeting kings and kokanee, tune trolling speed precisely—generally around 1.1–1.8 mph—and stagger depths to locate the main school.
- Striped bass and larger trout often patrol current breaks and bridge pilings; swing streamers or cast swimbaits across the current and let them sweep naturally.
