Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:51 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Sacramento

Sacramento sits at the crossroads of the Sacramento River, American River, and the upper California Delta, giving local anglers access to some of the most productive freshwater and tidal fisheries on the West Coast. Within a short drive of downtown, you can target striped bass, salmon, catfish, trout, and panfish from shore, kayak, or power boat.

Seasonal patterns are key. Spring brings American shad and the first consistent striped bass push up the Sacramento and American rivers. Shad respond well to 1/16–1/8 oz jigheads tipped with small grubs or shad darts worked on a slow swing in the current, especially near current seams and below riffles. Stripers in spring favor swimbaits, soft jerkbaits, and cut bait fished along channel edges, flooded sandbars, and around bridge pilings. Summer shifts the focus toward warmwater species: largemouth bass in Delta-connected sloughs, channel catfish in deep river holes, and bluegill and crappie in marinas and backwaters. Fall is prime time for Chinook salmon and another strong striper run, with fish holding on breaks in current and deeper troughs. Winter brings steelhead into the American River and concentrates resident stripers and catfish in slower, deeper stretches.

Habitat variety around Sacramento is a major advantage. The main Sacramento River is broad with strong current, deep shipping channels, and long outside bends; these spots are classic for stripers, sturgeon, and catfish. Target depth changes from 15–40 feet with live or cut bait on sliding sinker rigs, positioning your bait just on the downstream side of a ledge. The American River, by contrast, is a more defined tailwater with riffles, runs, and pools that set up perfectly for salmon, steelhead, and trout. Focus on travel lanes just off the fastest current and the heads and tails of deeper pools.

In the nearby Delta sloughs and flooded islands, weeds, tule lines, and submerged wood dominate. Largemouth bass relate closely to shade lines and weed edges—early and late in the day, work topwater frogs and walking baits tight to the tules; mid-day, switch to flipping jigs, Texas-rigged plastics, or chatterbaits along outside weed walls where current brushes against vegetation. For crappie and bluegill, target docks and marina basins using small jigs under a float, adjusting depth until you tick the top of submerged brush or pilings.

Presentation details matter in this area’s often pressured water. Downsizing line and leaders can dramatically improve the bite, especially in the clearer American River; 6–10 lb fluorocarbon for trout, shad, and steelhead is standard. On the more off-colored Sacramento River and Delta, heavier gear is acceptable—20–30 lb braid with fluorocarbon leaders for stripers and sturgeon helps control fish in heavy current. Boat anglers gain a big advantage by using electronics to follow channel edges and bait schools, but shore anglers can be just as effective by keying on obvious structure: bridge pilings, riprap bends, confluences with small creeks, and any point where fast water meets slow. Time your trips around low-light periods and tidal movement in the Delta-connected sections to intersect actively feeding fish.

The Best Fishing Spots around Sacramento

American River

Flowing from the Sierra foothills through Sacramento, the American River is a prime urban fishery for salmon (fall), steelhead (winter), American shad (late spring), and resident rainbow trout and striped bass; popular bank access points include Discovery Park, Watt Avenue Bridge, and areas near Nimbus Dam, while drift boats and rafts work the riffles and runs.

Sacramento River

The Sacramento River through the city offers year-round multi-species action with striped bass (spring/fall peaks), sturgeon in deep bends, catfish in summer, and migratory salmon moving through in fall; shore anglers gravitate to Discovery Park, Miller Park, and Garcia Bend Park, while boaters probe channels and drop-offs.

Folsom Lake

A big reservoir northeast of Sacramento, Folsom Lake produces smallmouth and largemouth bass, rainbow trout, king (Chinook) salmon plants, and seasonal catfish, with spring and early summer favored for bass and cooler months for trout; shore access and launch sites are widespread around Folsom Lake State Recreation Area.

Rio Vista

Downriver in the Delta, Rio Vista is famed for striped bass runs in spring and fall, plus sturgeon, catfish, and black bass in adjacent sloughs; anglers work the public piers and shoreline in town or launch to reach nearby Sherman Lake, Decker Island, and Cache Slough.

Lake Natoma

Below Folsom Lake, Lake Natoma offers clear, calm water with trout, smallmouth bass, and seasonal shad/stripers moving through, fishing best in spring and fall; paddlers and small boats cover points and coves while shore anglers use trails and access near Willow Creek Recreation Area and Nimbus Flat.

Discovery Park

At the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers, Discovery Park is a high-traffic hotspot for shad in late spring, stripers in spring/fall, catfish in summer, and salmon moving through in fall; bank anglers work the confluence and levee edges while boats launch to reach nearby American River and Sacramento River stretches.

Port of Sacramento

Also known as the Port of West Sacramento, this harbor on the Sacramento Deep Water Ship Channel holds striped bass, sturgeon, and catfish, with best action in spring and fall tides; anglers target edges, pilings, and current seams, and launch to explore the Sacramento Deep Water Ship Channel and adjacent river.

Freeport

Just south of Sacramento, the riverside community of Freeport offers easy access to striped bass, catfish, and seasonal salmon travel lanes, with productive spots around the bridge and marinas; boaters and bank anglers also roam nearby Steamboat Slough and Georgiana Slough.

Garcia Bend Park

A popular Sacramento River launch and shoreline area in the Pocket, Garcia Bend Park sees striped bass in spring/fall, summer catfish, and salmon moving through in fall; anglers cast along riprap and eddies, or launch to probe channels toward Freeport and upstream city stretches.

Miller Park

Near downtown on the Sacramento River, Miller Park provides convenient access for striped bass, catfish, and transiting salmon, with productive current breaks around the marina and bends; from here boats and kayaks fan out toward Discovery Park or downstream toward Freeport.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 2 main harbours in this area.
