Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 13:54 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Bartow

Bartow, Florida sits in the heart of Central Florida’s lake country, with the Peace River, small natural lakes, and reclaimed phosphate pits providing diverse freshwater fishing. The standout draw is quality largemouth bass, but Bartow anglers also enjoy strong panfish and catfish action in both still and flowing water.

Seasonal patterns are key. From late December through March, bass push shallow into sandy pockets, cattail edges, and pads to spawn. This is prime time for big fish on soft plastics, suspending jerkbaits, and lipless crankbaits slow-rolled across staging flats in lakes and oxbows off the Peace River. April through early June brings aggressive post-spawn bass that feed heavily on shad and shiners; weightless stick baits, swim jigs, and topwater frogs shine around shallow grass and emergent pads. Summer heat pushes bass deeper into offshore hydrilla edges, brush piles, and canal intersections. Early and late in the day, buzzbaits and walking topwaters draw explosive strikes; once the sun is up, flipping creature baits into heavy cover or slow-dragging Carolina rigs along drop-offs is more reliable. Fall sees baitfish schooling along windblown banks and points, and moving baits—squarebills, chatterbaits, and swimbaits—produce numbers and occasional trophies.

Panfish and crappie anchor year-round family fishing around Bartow. Black crappie (“specks”) bite best from late fall through early spring, especially in deeper holes of area lakes and in slow bends of the Peace River. Slow-trolling (“spider rigging”) small jigs and minnows or vertical jigging around submerged timber is effective. Bluegill and redear sunfish peak around the full moons of spring and early summer, bedding on shallow sand and shell in quiet coves and along reed lines. Simple worms or crickets under a float, or small Beetle Spins and tiny jigs, will keep rods bent.

Habitat types around Bartow demand matching your approach to the water. Natural lakes and phosphate pits often have steep drops, scattered brush, and offshore grass clumps. Focus on transitions where hard bottom meets muck, or where hydrilla meets open water. On the Peace River, current breaks are everything: outside bends, laydowns, logjams, and deeper holes at creek mouths hold bass, bowfin, gar, and catfish. Fish your baits slightly upstream and let them drift naturally into the eddies and slack water.

Productive techniques include:

  • Soft plastics: Texas-rigged worms, stick baits, and creature baits in junebug, black blue flake, and watermelon red for lakes and river sloughs.
  • Power fishing: Chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and squarebills for covering shoreline grass, docks, and wind-blown edges.
  • Live bait: Wild shiners for trophy bass; minnows for specks; worms and crickets for bream in any small pond or canal.
  • Catfish tactics: Cut bait or chicken liver on slip-sinker rigs in deeper holes of the Peace River or near culverts and canals after summer rains.

Tactically, think stealth and angles. In clear phosphate pits, long casts with lighter line get more bites. In the darker, tannic river water, heavier line and bold colors work fine. Use the wind to your advantage by drifting along grasslines and letting your lures swim naturally with the chop. Around Bartow, consistently good fishing comes from reading the season, targeting the right structure, and rotating between finesse and power presentations until the fish show you what they want.
