Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Tampa
Tampa fishing revolves around the vast, shallow expanse of Tampa Bay and quick access to the Gulf of Mexico. The system fishes like a classic Florida estuary, with mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, grass flats, channels, bridges, and artificial reefs all within a short run. Successful anglers tailor their tactics to the tides, wind, and season rather than sticking to one spot or technique.
In spring, warming water kicks off aggressive feeding from snook, redfish, and spotted seatrout on the bay’s outside flats and mangrove edges. Look for moving water around points, creek mouths, and oyster bars. Free-line live scaled sardines or small pinfish on light fluorocarbon leaders, or throw soft plastic paddletails and jerkbaits along the edges of sand potholes in 2–5 feet. This is also when Spanish mackerel and early kingfish push into the bay; target them by drifting or slow-trolling spoons and small live baits around bait schools and channel edges.
Summer in Tampa is all about dawn, dusk, and night fishing to beat the heat. Snook stack on passes, bridges, and beaches; work shadow lines with live sardines, shrimp, or swimbaits on 30–40 lb leader. Inside the bay, focus on deeper grass flats early, then move to mangrove shorelines and dock lines as the sun climbs. This is prime time for tarpon along the beaches and shipping channels—free-line live crabs or threadfins ahead of rolling fish, or drift natural baits around channel buoys and edges.
Fall brings some of the best all-around fishing in Tampa. Bait floods the bay, and nearly every species feeds heavily. Redfish school on flats and shorelines; sight-cast to pushing wakes with gold spoons, topwater plugs, or live pinfish. Trout and mangrove snapper stack on deeper grass and rock edges; use popping cork rigs with shrimp or small jigs for steady action. Offshore and nearshore, kingfish, gag grouper, cobia, and Spanish mackerel key in on bait-laden ledges and artificial reefs—slow-troll live baits or anchor and chum over structure.
Winter patterns center on clear, cooler water and slower presentations. Trout slide into deeper holes, channels, and the edges of residential canals; work soft plastics slowly along the bottom. Sheepshead and black drum concentrate around bridges, docks, and rock piles—present shrimp or fiddler crabs tight to the structure with just enough weight to hold bottom. On warm, calm afternoons, look for snook and redfish sunning in shallow potholes or on dark-bottom flats, and approach quietly with long casts and finesse baits.
Across seasons, the most consistent Tampa strategy is to follow the bait. Watch for diving birds, nervous bait pods, and surface slicks. Use scaled-down tackle and fluorocarbon in the bay’s clear water, and prioritize quiet approaches—poling, drifting, or using a trolling motor on low power. By matching your technique to the habitat—grass flats, mangroves, passes, bridges, or reefs—you can stay on quality fish around Tampa all year long.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 4 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 4 main harbours in this area.
