Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Boise
Fishing in Boise, Idaho centers on the Boise River system and a ring of productive reservoirs that give anglers everything from urban trout to deep-water kokanee. Within 45–90 minutes of downtown you can be casting dry flies to rising rainbows, jigging for smallmouth over rocky humps, or trolling for kokanee and landlocked Chinook. The mix of cold tailwaters, freestone stretches, and stillwater fisheries keeps something biting in every season.
Seasonal patterns around Boise follow runoff and reservoir levels. Spring brings higher flows in the Boise River, but as water clears, nymphing with small mayfly and stonefly patterns, or drifting bait and inline spinners, becomes very effective for rainbow and brown trout from Boise downstream through Caldwell. In local warmwater ponds and the lower Snake system, pre-spawn smallmouth and largemouth bass move shallow; target them with jerkbaits, lipless cranks, and 3–4 inch soft plastics along rock transitions and flooded brush.
Summer delivers the most consistent multi-species fishing. On the Boise River through town, look for trout in deeper riffles, undercut banks, and shaded runs; euro-nymph rigs, small streamers, and size 14–18 dry-dropper setups are productive. Early and late, throw terrestrials tight to banks. Nearby reservoirs like Lucky Peak, Arrowrock, and Anderson Ranch shine for kokanee, trout, and smallmouth. Troll dodger-and-hoochie rigs or small spoons at the depth where you mark schools on sonar, adjusting speed in the 1.1–1.7 mph range until you dial in the bite.
Fall is prime time around Boise for quality fish. Reservoir trout and smallmouth feed aggressively as water cools; vertical jigging spoons on steep breaks, dragging football jigs, or working swimbaits along rocky points will pick off larger bass. On the Boise River, brown trout stage for the spawn—swinging streamers on sink-tips or stripping small articulated patterns around structure is a high-percentage tactic. Don’t overlook mountain whitefish in deeper wintering holes; nymphs and small bead-head flies under indicators keep rods bent when trout get selective.
Winter fishing is very much alive. The Boise River can fish well during warm spells; think slow, deep presentations with tiny midges and mayfly nymphs, or small soft-plastics on light jig heads for multi-species action. When safe ice forms on nearby lakes and reservoirs in the region, target perch, trout, and panfish with tungsten jigs tipped with worms or soft plastics, focusing on weed edges and subtle depth changes.
Habitat and tactical tips are straightforward but critical around Boise. In the river, prioritize seams where fast and slow currents meet, boulder fields, and the downstream ends of islands. Wading anglers do well by thoroughly covering each lane with multiple drifts before moving. In reservoirs, use electronics to find bait, submerged creek channels, and rock-to-mud transitions; spend more time searching than fishing until you see clear signs of life. Downsizing presentations and using fluorocarbon leaders often makes the difference in Boise’s increasingly pressured waters, especially on sunny, calm days. Rotate through colors and depths systematically and you’ll unlock the consistent fishing that makes the Boise area such a compelling destination.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
