Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 11:27 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~17 days on 25th October
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    384,313 km
    Proximity:
    50.2 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Bloomington

Bloomington, Indiana fishing is dominated by Monroe Lake, the state’s largest reservoir, along with Griffy Lake, Leonard Springs, and a network of small ponds and creeks scattered around town. These waters provide consistent action for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and panfish, plus seasonal opportunities for white bass, hybrid striped bass, and walleye. Shore anglers and boaters both have strong options, with marinas, causeways, and public access sites spread across the region.

Monroe Lake is the centerpiece, with classic Indiana reservoir structure: long creek arms, flooded timber, rocky points, main-lake humps, and expansive coves. Largemouth bass are the marquee species here. In early spring, focus on north-facing coves that warm first; work shallow wood, stumps, and riprap with suspending jerkbaits, flat-sided crankbaits, and finesse jigs. As water warms into the 60s, bass move to spawning pockets; soft plastics like Texas-rigged creature baits and weightless stick worms pitched to visible cover are highly effective.

Through summer, bass on Monroe slide to deeper points, channel swings, and brush piles. Carolina rigs, football jigs, and deep-diving crankbaits shine on main-lake points and offshore structure. At low light or on overcast days, toss walking topwaters and buzzbaits over shallow flats and along the shoreline grass. In fall, follow baitfish into the backs of coves; squarebill crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and swimbaits worked around shad schools can produce fast action.

Crappie fishing around Bloomington is strong, especially on Monroe’s brush piles, standing timber, and docks. In late winter and early spring, vertical jig small tubes or marabou jigs over submerged timber along creek channels. As crappie move shallow to spawn, target flooded bushes and brush in 4–8 feet of water with minnows under slip bobbers or 1/32–1/16 oz jigs. In summer, the key is finding 15–25 feet of water with cover; use electronics to locate brush and hold jigs just above the fish.

Channel catfish, flatheads, and blues offer a reliable bite from late spring through fall. On Monroe and local rivers, catfish concentrate along channel bends, riprap, and around submerged timber. Cut shad, chicken liver, and nightcrawlers fished on slip-sinker rigs near the bottom are dependable producers. After dark, focus on gently sloping banks and shallow flats adjacent to deep water.

Griffy Lake and smaller Bloomington-area ponds are excellent for bank anglers targeting bluegill, redear sunfish, and smaller largemouth bass. During the bluegill spawn in late spring and early summer, scan for circular beds in protected coves and cast small pieces of worm or tiny jigs under a float. Light spinning tackle and 4–6 lb line maximize bites. For pond bass, dawn and dusk are prime; weightless plastics, small spinnerbaits, and frogs worked around weed edges and wood produce well.

White bass, hybrids, and the occasional walleye on Monroe tend to be structure-oriented and follow open-water bait. Spring runs up creek arms can be targeted with small swimbaits, in-line spinners, and jigs. During summer, watch for surface activity and birds; schooling fish can be caught on spoons and compact crankbaits. Year-round, successful Bloomington anglers stay mobile, use electronics when available, and match lure size and depth closely to the dominant forage.
