Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.
7 Day Fishing Weather
Fishing Overview Lincoln
Fishing around Lincoln, Nebraska centers on a network of man-made reservoirs and urban lakes that provide year-round opportunity. Key waters include Branched Oak Lake northwest of town, Pawnee, Stagecoach, Wagon Train, and Yankee Hill to the south and west, plus convenient in-town options like Holmes, Bowling, and Oak lakes. These fisheries are managed with bass, walleye, catfish, panfish, and seasonal trout in mind, giving local anglers a full mixed-bag lineup.
Seasonal patterns drive success around Lincoln. In early spring, water warms first in shallow, north-facing coves on reservoirs and city lakes. This is prime time for crappie and pre-spawn largemouth bass. Slow presentations shine: 1/16β1/8 oz crappie jigs under a fixed or slip bobber, small hair jigs, and finesse soft plastics for bass worked tight to brush, riprap, and submerged wood. As late spring arrives, bass and bluegill move shallow to spawn; sight-fishing with wacky-rigged stickbaits, small Texas-rigged creatures, or tiny pieces of nightcrawler on size 8β10 hooks is effective.
Summer patterns on reservoirs like Branched Oak and Pawnee shift fish deeper and toward main-lake structure. Walleye often relate to points, humps, and channel edges in 10β20 feet of water. Trolling crankbaits along breaklines, bottom-bouncers with live bait or plastics, and slow-death rigs are common tactics. For bass, look for weed edges, submerged roadbeds, and riprap; medium-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and swimbaits cover water efficiently. Night fishing is productive for both walleye and channel catfish during hot weather; use cut bait, chicken liver, or dip bait around windblown banks, dam faces, and creek-channel bends.
Fall fishing around Lincoln is often underrated. Cooling water pushes baitfish shallow, and bass, walleye, and white bass feed aggressively. Focus on windblown shorelines, mouths of coves, and areas with schools of shad or minnows flicking on the surface. Lipless crankbaits, jerkbaits, and paddle-tail swimbaits shine for bass and wipers, while jig-and-minnow or jig-and-plastic combos produce walleye and crappie. Panfish stack on remaining green weeds and wood, making vertical jigging from small boats, kayaks, or even fishing docks very efficient.
In winter, many Lincoln-area lakes see ice cover, creating solid ice fishing opportunities when conditions allow. Focus on mid-depth basins and breaks near old creek channels for crappie and bluegill. Use small tungsten jigs tipped with waxworms or plastics and work them subtly just off bottom or above visible marks on a flasher. For catfish and walleye through the ice, target points and saddles in 8β18 feet and set deadsticks with minnows in addition to actively jigging spoons.
Habitat and tactical tips are consistent across most Lincoln fisheries. Seek out riprap along dams and causeways for spring and fall bass and walleye. Submerged brush piles and fish attractorsβoften marked on local mapsβare crappie magnets. Shallow coves and inflowing creeks draw fish during runoff and windy days, while main-lake humps and drop-offs become key in midsummer. Downsizing tackle can dramatically increase bites in these highly pressured lakes: 6β8 lb fluorocarbon for finesse bass and crappie, and 8β12 lb for multi-species rigs. For bank anglers, prioritize spots near parking areas with visible structureβfishing piers, rock banks, and small pointsβand plan around wind direction, fishing the sides of the lake where waves concentrate plankton, baitfish, and ultimately gamefish.
