Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Goshen
Fishing around Goshen, Indiana revolves around a mix of shallow natural lakes, reclaimed gravel pits, and the Elkhart River system. These waters warm quickly in spring, grow thick weed edges by early summer, and offer reliable structure for bass, panfish, and catfish. Fidler Pond inside town, the Elkhart River, and numerous nearby lakes in Elkhart County make Goshen a handy base for bank anglers, kayakers, and small-boat fishermen.
Spring is a key season. As water temperatures climb into the 50s, bluegill, crappie, and perch move into canals, shallow bays, and soft-bottom shorelines. Use small crappie tubes, 1/32–1/16 oz marabou jigs, or live minnows under a slip float, working the first green weeds and any wood cover. Largemouth bass push shallow soon after ice-out; target north-facing shorelines, riprap along public access areas, and culvert mouths with suspending jerkbaits and compact jigs. On the Elkhart River, slowly drift a jig-and-minnow combo along current seams for walleye in early morning and evening.
By summer, weed growth dominates most Goshen-area lakes and ponds. Early and late in the day, focus on outside weedlines in 6–12 feet with Texas-rigged worms, swim jigs, and spinnerbaits for largemouth bass. Midday, bass often bury in the thickest mats; punching with a compact creature bait and a 3/4–1 oz weight can trigger bigger fish. Panfish stack on the deeper edge of weeds and around isolated patches of cabbage on clearer lakes; vertically present small ice-style jigs tipped with waxworms or plastics. Channel catfish in the Elkhart River and local ponds respond well after dark to cut bait, dip bait, or nightcrawlers fished on simple slip-sinker rigs near bends, logjams, and bridge pilings.
In fall, cooling water pushes baitfish shallow again and improves daytime action. Work crankbaits and lipless cranks along remaining green weeds and rocky shorelines for bass and the occasional walleye. Crappie form loose schools over mid-depth flats and around submerged brush; slowly troll or drift small beetle spins or 1/16 oz jigs to cover water until you mark a school, then hover and vertically jig. Carp and drum in the river stay active well into late fall; sweet corn or dough baits on simple bottom rigs catch steady numbers when fished near deeper holes and current breaks.
Winter brings consistent ice-fishing on smaller lakes and ponds around Goshen most years. Bluegill, redear, and perch are prime targets. Start shallow over remaining weed clumps with tiny tungsten jigs and 2–4 lb line, then move progressively deeper as winter sets in. Use a slow, subtle cadence and downsize presentations in clear water. On larger lakes nearby, look for perch on soft-bottom flats adjacent to drop-offs, and use set-lines or tip‑ups with small minnows for bonus walleye and pike during low-light periods.
Local tactics and access center on staying mobile and downsizing presentations. Kayaks and small jon boats excel on Goshen-area waters, allowing you to slide into undeveloped shorelines and quiet back bays. Bank anglers do well by targeting inflows, outflows, bridges, and any visible cover. Light spinning gear, 4–8 lb mono or fluoro, and a compact tackle box of jigs, small crankbaits, soft plastics, and hooks for live bait will cover most fishing situations around Goshen throughout the year.
