Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Jasper
Jasper, Texas sits in the heart of some of the best freshwater fishing in the South, anchored by Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the Angelina River, and a network of timbered coves and creeks. This is classic East Texas structure fishing: submerged stumps, creek channels, hydrilla beds, and shallow flats all within a short drive of town.
Seasonal patterns drive most fishing decisions here. In late winter and early spring, prespawn largemouth bass stage on secondary points, drains, and channel swings in 8–15 feet of water. Slow-rolled spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and Carolina rigs produce around these staging areas. As water warms into the 60s, bass push shallow to spawning pockets—look for protected coves with some hard bottom and scattered cover, and pitch soft plastics or Texas-rigged creature baits tight to visible cover.
By early summer, a classic deep-structure bite sets up on Sam Rayburn and other area lakes. Bass school on offshore humps, ledges, and main-lake points in 15–25 feet. Electronics become crucial: graph for bait balls and arcs on the bottom, then work them with deep-diving crankbaits, big worms, football jigs, and spoons. Early and late, there’s a steady topwater bite over grass edges and around shallow wood—walking baits, buzzbaits, and popping plugs excel when shad are active.
Crappie fishing gains momentum in late winter when fish stack on bridge pilings, brush piles, and channel edges. Jigs in natural shad and chartreuse patterns, or small minnows on light line, are standard. During the spawn, crappie move shallow into buckbrush and shoreline timber; probe tight cover methodically, keeping the bait just above their level. In summer and fall, they migrate back to deeper brush and standing timber—vertical presentations with small jigs fished precisely in the strike zone are most productive.
Catfish are a reliable option year-round. Channel and blue catfish hold along river bends, ledges, and windblown points where current or wind concentrate food. Punch baits, cut shad, and chicken liver on slip rigs or tight-line setups work well. At night in warmer months, target shallow flats and the upper ends of creeks where cats roam foraging. Flatheads relate more to heavy cover—logjams, big laydowns, and rock—so present live bream or goldfish right in the thick stuff with stout tackle.
For white bass, focus on river and creek arms during late winter and early spring when they run upstream. Small slabs, grubs, and inline spinners cast across current seams or retrieved through deeper pools trigger fast action, especially when you locate a school. Panfish such as bluegill and redear sunfish are plentiful around docks, grass lines, and fallen trees; small worms or crickets under a float are ideal for filling a cooler or entertaining kids.
Jasper’s key tactical edge is understanding habitat transitions. Productive areas often combine two or more features: grass meeting timber, channel edges beside flats, or hard bottom adjacent to soft. Use mapping and sonar to line up these intersections, then fish them thoroughly at the right seasonal depth. Adjust lure size and color to water clarity—darker, bulkier baits in stained water and more natural, translucent colors in clearer conditions—and you’ll stay in the bite across Jasper’s diverse fisheries.
