Fishing Overview Kokomo

Fishing in Kokomo, Indiana revolves around Kokomo Reservoir, Wildcat Creek, and a network of smaller lakes, park ponds, and farm ponds scattered around Howard County. The area’s mix of reservoirs, flowing water, and warm, shallow ponds creates reliable action for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, panfish, and seasonal trout, with most spots offering convenient bank and small-boat access.

Seasonal patterns in Kokomo are classic Midwestern. In early spring, focus on warming water in the upper ends of Kokomo Reservoir, back bays, and creek inlets where crappie and bluegill stage around brush and riprap. Small minnows under a float, 1/32–1/16 oz tube jigs, and hair jigs are top producers. Largemouth bass push shallow as water temps creep into the low 50s; fish slow with finesse jigs, suspending jerkbaits, and Texas-rigged soft plastics along emerging weedlines and wood.

By late spring and early summer, Kokomo’s bass and panfish are firmly shallow. Target bass around laydowns, riprap, and man-made structure with spinnerbaits, squarebill crankbaits, and weightless stickbaits. Bluegill and redear stack on bedding areas in protected pockets; tiny pieces of nightcrawler or waxworms under a small float are hard to beat. Evening and after-dark action for channel catfish ramps up as water warms, with cut bait, chicken liver, and stinkbaits fished on bottom along the reservoir channel edges, points, and creek mouths.

Summer fishing shifts to a low-light game. At Kokomo Reservoir and similar local lakes, dawn and dusk are prime for active bass on topwater frogs, buzzbaits, and walking baits around shoreline vegetation and docks. During the day, slide out to deeper points and the old creek channel; Carolina rigs, deep-diving crankbaits, and drop-shots put fish in the boat. In Wildcat Creek, smallmouth bass and rock bass feed actively in current seams—cast small tubes, 3–4 inch soft-plastic craws, and in-line spinners into riffles and along boulder edges.

Fall is one of the best times to fish around Kokomo. Cooling water pushes shad and panfish shallow, and bass follow. Work moving baits—medium crankbaits, lipless cranks, and swimbaits—along windy banks, riprap, and the mouths of feeder creeks. Crappie often suspend off deeper brush and channel bends; use electronics or probe with slip floats and small jigs at varying depths until you mark the school. Catfish feed heavily ahead of winter, and larger cut baits can draw in bigger channel and flathead cats from deep holes in the reservoir and the creek.

Key habitat types include creek channels in Kokomo Reservoir, rocky areas and bridge abutments on Wildcat Creek, and weed edges in local ponds and park lakes. Brush piles, laydowns, and riprap are especially important for crappie and bass. In clearer water, downsize line and lures; in the common stained conditions after a rain, increase lure profile and use darker colors or rattling baits.

Tactical tips: bank anglers will do well targeting points, inflow areas, and any visible cover. Pack a simple system: a medium spinning combo with 6–10 lb mono or fluoro for panfish and bass, and a heavier rod with 12–17 lb mono for catfish and carp. Kayak and small-boat anglers gain an edge by tracing reservoir channel swings, offshore humps, and mid-lake brush with sonar. In current on Wildcat Creek, position downstream and across from key targets, make quartering upstream casts, and let your bait drift naturally back toward you.
