Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:5 hours of daylight. We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Valparaiso

Valparaiso, Indiana fishing benefits from its central position between inland natural lakes, managed park ponds, the Kankakee River system, and the southern basin of Lake Michigan. Within 15–45 minutes of town you can be casting for largemouth bass in weedy natural lakes, drifting live bait for walleye on broad river bends, or trolling deep structure for salmon and lake trout off the Portage and Michigan City harbors.

Seasonal patterns are predictable across the Valparaiso area. In early spring, shorelines on shallow lakes and park ponds warm first, drawing prespawn largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill into 2–6 feet of water. Small jigs tipped with plastics or minnows under a float produce well around submerged brush and early weed growth. By late spring and early summer, weedlines on local lakes and impoundments become prime for bass and pike; work the outside edges with spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and Texas-rigged soft plastics. Mid-summer pushes panfish deeper to mid-lake weed clumps and drop-offs, where small slip-float rigs and tiny jigs pay off.

Fall is one of the best times to fish around Valparaiso. Cooling water pulls baitfish onto points, creek mouths, and riprap banks. Bass and walleye respond to moving baits—medium-diving crankbaits, swimbaits, and lipless cranks cover water efficiently. On Lake Michigan, nearshore trolling for coho, chinook, and lake trout along temperature breaks and contour lines can be excellent from late summer into fall. Winter brings solid ice most years on smaller lakes and ponds; anglers focus on bluegill, crappie, and perch over weed beds and subtle basin humps using tiny tungsten jigs and plastics.

Habitat types around Valparaiso include:

  • Natural and kettle lakes with sand and gravel bottoms, cabbage beds, coontail, and defined weedlines—ideal for largemouth bass, pike, crappie, and bluegill.
  • Park and subdivision ponds that hold surprisingly good numbers of bass and panfish; target inflow corners, aerators, and man-made structure.
  • River backwaters and channels of the Kankakee system, where slow outside bends, laydowns, and rock transitions hold walleye, catfish, and smallmouth.
  • Lake Michigan nearshore structure, including breakwalls, harbor mouths, and shipping channels that attract salmonids and smallmouth bass.

Practical tactics are straightforward. For Valparaiso-area largemouth, a 3/8 oz jig with a craw trailer pitched to wood, docks, and thick weed clumps is a year-round producer. In clearer lakes, downsized finesse presentations—Ned rigs, wacky-rigged stick worms, and small jerkbaits—excel under high sun and calm conditions. Crappie and bluegill respond consistently to 1/64–1/32 oz jigs in chartreuse, white, and natural baitfish colors, fished under a slip float so you can adjust depth to just above the fish.

On the Kankakee and connected channels, drifting or slowly dragging live bait—nightcrawlers, leeches, or minnows—along current seams, wing dams, and gravel bars is a dependable approach for walleye and catfish. Use just enough weight to tap bottom and watch for subtle line ticks. For Lake Michigan salmon and trout, common setups include downriggers and divers pulling spoons and flasher-fly combinations; focus on temperature bands and bait schools rather than specific depths, adjusting your spread as light and wind change.

From bank-fishing small ponds right in town to trailering a boat to Lake Michigan, Valparaiso offers a wide radius of diverse water. Matching your techniques to season, depth, and available forage is the key to steady success across this productive northwest Indiana fishing hub.
