Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:47 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Vincennes

Vincennes, Indiana fishing is dominated by the Wabash River and its feeder creeks, plus a scattering of public lakes and ponds that hold dependable populations of bass, panfish, and catfish. The river here is broad and slow, with sharp outside bends, rock bars, and log-strewn banks that concentrate gamefish. Seasonal water levels drive fish location, so reading current seams, depth changes, and cover is more important than any particular spot.

Spring kicks off with rising Wabash flows that pull smallmouth bass, spotted bass, and drum tight to rocky banks, bridge pilings, and riprap. Target eddies and current breaks with 3–4 inch soft plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads, small crankbaits, and inline spinners. As the water warms into the 60s, white bass and hybrid stripers often push shad into current seams; watch for surface activity and work small swimbaits or shad-style crankbaits just below the top. In area ponds and small lakes, spring is prime for largemouth bass along emergent vegetation and shallow wood; Texas-rigged worms, spinnerbaits, and weightless stickbaits excel.

By summer, daytime Wabash fishing around Vincennes becomes a low-light game. Flathead and channel catfish are the reliable stars. Focus after dark on deep outside bends, the heads and tails of holes, and undercut banks. Use live bluegill, green sunfish, or big creek chubs for flatheads on sturdy slip-sinker rigs with 5/0–8/0 circle hooks and 40–60 lb leaders. Channels take cut shad, shrimp, or dip baits fished just off the main current. Scale down to smaller hooks and lighter sinkers for steady action with eater-size fish. For shore anglers, look for accessible gravel bars and below-bridge stretches where bank erosion has created depth close to shore.

Local lakes and park ponds shine through summer with bluegill, redear sunfish, and crappie. Fish tight to shade: docks, overhanging trees, and weed edges. A simple slip float with a small hook, split shot, and redworms or waxworms will out-fish most artificial presentations for panfish. Early and late in the day, work topwater poppers, buzzbaits, or hollow-body frogs for largemouth around lily pads and shallow grass. Midday, slow down with wacky-rigged stickbaits and finesse jigs on the first drop-off outside of visible cover.

Fall is one of the best times to fish around Vincennes. Cooling water puts river smallmouth, white bass, walleye/sauger, and catfish on the feed. Work mid-depth rock bars, gravel points, and downstream sides of islands with medium-diving crankbaits, 1/4–3/8 oz jigs, and live minnows. In lakes, bass and crappie slide off shallow flats toward channels and secondary points. Follow baitfish schools with small swimbaits and blade baits, and be ready for mixed bags that can include drum and the occasional walleye or sauger in the main river.

Winter fishing centers on deeper, slower stretches of the Wabash and the deepest holes in small lakes. Catfish, drum, and carp stack in soft-bottomed wintering areas; use small pieces of cut bait and lighter sinkers to present just off bottom. For panfish and bass in lakes, downsize dramatically: 1/32–1/16 oz hair jigs, ice jigs, or small spoons tipped with waxworms, fished slowly over the deepest structure available. When ice-free, sunny afternoons can pull bluegill and crappie slightly shallower, so check the first breakline off the bank.

Across all seasons, success in the Vincennes area comes from paying attention to water level, clarity, and current. Rising, stained water pushes river fish shallow into cover; falling, clearing water pulls them back to deeper holes and channel edges. Match your tactic—whether it’s bottom rigs for catfish, finesse jigs for bass, or floats for panfish—to the specific habitat: current seams in the Wabash, weedlines and laydowns in lakes, and shaded banks in smaller creeks.
