Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Bowling Green
Bowling Green, Kentucky sits in the heart of some of south‑central Kentucky’s most consistent freshwater fishing. The Barren River, Barren River Lake, and smaller city lakes and farm ponds give anglers a mix of moving water and still-water options, with year-round opportunities for bass, crappie, catfish, trout, and panfish within a 30–40 minute radius of town.
Seasonal patterns drive the bite around Bowling Green. In late winter and early spring, prespawn largemouth and smallmouth bass stage on channel swings, rocky points, and the first hard-cover they find near deep water in the Barren River and Barren River Lake. Jigs, suspending jerkbaits, and slow-rolled spinnerbaits are top producers when water is cold and slightly stained. As water hits the upper 50s into the 60s, bass push shallow onto gravel flats, flooded bushes, and riprap; Texas-rigged plastics, wacky worms, and squarebill crankbaits shine.
By late spring and early summer, crappie and bluegill become reliable targets around stake beds, brush piles, and laydowns in coves and creek arms. Vertical fishing small tube jigs or minnows over wood is a consistent crappie tactic, while crickets or small pieces of nightcrawler under a float catch panfish anywhere you find shallow cover. Through the heat of summer, focus early and late on main-lake points, river ledges, and deeper brush, switching to Carolina rigs, deep-diving crankbaits, or drop-shot rigs for bass holding on structure transitions.
Fall fishing around Bowling Green is often overlooked but extremely productive. Shad push into creeks on Barren River Lake and into eddies and slower stretches of the Barren River, pulling white bass, hybrid striped bass, and schooling largemouth with them. Watch for surface busting and run small swimbaits, spoons, or lipless crankbaits through schooling activity. As water cools, downsized finesse presentations along chunk rock and current seams keep the bite going well into early winter.
Key habitats and locations include the Barren River’s outside bends, rock bars, and current breaks, as well as marina areas, bridge pilings, and secondary points on Barren River Lake. Small city lakes and subdivision ponds around Bowling Green hold surprisingly good populations of bass and panfish; target shaded banks, inflow pipes, and any visible wood or vegetation. In moving water, focus on seams below riffles, behind boulders, and along undercut banks for smallmouth, sauger, drum, and catfish.
Techniques & tactical tips for the Bowling Green area revolve around matching water clarity and current. After rains, when the Barren River runs high and stained, use larger, noisy baits—bladed jigs, rattling crankbaits, and strong-scented cut bait for catfish. In clear, stable conditions, finesse presentations on light line excel: shaky-head worms, Ned rigs, and small hair jigs will consistently trigger pressured bass and river smallmouth. At night in summer, throw black spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, or large worms along riprap and rocky points for quality largemouth and the occasional big smallmouth.
- Carry a mix of moving baits and bottom-contact finesse lures to adjust to swift weather and water-level changes.
- On lakes, graph for bait schools along drops and humps; fish directly below them with jigs or live bait.
- On rivers, anchor or slip-drift baits through deep holes and current edges for channel and blue catfish.
- For shore anglers, focus on bridges, public access points, and park lakes at dawn and dusk for the most consistent action.
With its mix of river and reservoir fishing and an abundance of accessible water, the Bowling Green area rewards anglers who adapt to seasonal movements and subtle habitat shifts, keeping rods bent nearly every month of the year.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
