Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Murray
Fishing around Murray, Kentucky centers on Kentucky Lake, with quick access through nearby ramps like Kenlake, Wildcat Creek, and other launches scattered along the western shore. The lake’s mix of shallow coves, expansive flats, creek channels, and deep main-river ledges gives Murray-area anglers consistent action for bass, crappie, catfish, and panfish all year.
Seasonal patterns drive most successful trips. In late winter and early spring, crappie and bass stage along creek channel bends, secondary points, and brush piles in 8–15 feet of water. Spider-rigging with minnows or jigs over stake beds is a proven Murray-area crappie tactic, while bass anglers do well slow-rolling spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and jig-and-craw combos along channel swings. As water warms into the mid-60s, both bass and crappie slide shallow into backs of bays to spawn; pitch light jigs or small plastics to visible cover for crappie, and target bass with weightless soft plastics, topwater poppers, and swim jigs around buck brush and flooded shoreline cover.
By early summer, the famous Kentucky Lake ledge bite becomes the main event for Murray bass anglers. Schools of largemouth stack on main-lake and secondary channel drops in 12–25 feet of water. Use your electronics to locate bait and fish, then work deep-diving crankbaits, big football jigs, Carolina rigs, and large soft swimbaits along the ledges. Pay attention to current generation on the Tennessee River side of the system; even mild current can fire up offshore schools. Early and late, you can still find bass roaming shallow on flats and grass edges—walking topwaters and buzzbaits excel during those low-light windows.
Crappie transition to deeper brush, stake beds, and submerged timber in 12–20 feet by summer. Vertical presentations with small tube jigs, hair jigs, or live minnows fished just above the cover put numbers in the boat. Panfish anglers around Murray find steady action on bluegill and redear sunfish by targeting gravel banks, pea-gravel pockets, and shallow brush in late spring and early summer with worms, crickets, and small hair jigs under fixed or slip floats.
Catfish are a reliable option around Murray nearly year-round. Channel and blue catfish relate to the old river channel, channel swings, and deeper flats. Drift-fishing or controlled-drifting cut shad or skipjack across 15–30-foot flats is a high-percentage tactic. At night, anchoring on channel edges and humps with fresh cut bait produces bigger blues and flatheads. Bank anglers do well near bridges, causeways, and riprap with bottom rigs and heavy sinkers to hold in light current.
Striped, white, and yellow bass provide added action, especially around main-lake points, humps, and the mouths of major creeks. Watch for surface schooling activity in summer and early fall and cast spoons, small swimbaits, or topwaters into breaking fish. When they’re deeper, vertical jigging spoons or tail-spinners over bait schools seen on sonar is effective.
Success around Murray often comes down to reading the lake’s structure and following the seasonal movements: shallow bays in spring, ledges and deeper cover in summer, and chasing bait-rich creek arms and channel swings in fall and winter. Focus on your electronics, adjust depth and presentation speed to water temperature and clarity, and let wind and subtle current dictate which banks, points, and ledges get priority on any given day.
