Fishing in Richmond, VA centers on the James River, one of the East Coast’s premier urban fisheries, backed up by nearby lakes, ponds, and seasonal trout waters. Anglers can target trophy blue catfish, river smallmouth, largemouth in backwaters, plus runs of shad and striped bass right in the heart of the city.

Seasonal patterns drive much of the action. In late winter and early spring, giant blue catfish stack in deeper James River holes from Richmond downstream; heavy cut bait on 3–8 oz sinkers fished on the bottom produces the most consistent bites. March–April sees American and hickory shad push upriver into the fall line around downtown, with light spinning gear, shad darts, and small spoons producing fast action. Stripers often mix with the shad run, hitting small swimbaits and bucktail jigs in current seams. Summer brings strong smallmouth and flathead catfish fishing around the rocks, ledges, and shoals near the city, while largemouth bass fishing improves in slower side channels, marinas, and nearby reservoirs. Fall is a prime time for both catfish and bass, as baitfish school and fish feed heavily ahead of winter.

For smallmouth and river stripers, target faster water edges, boulder fields, and ledge transitions from the fall line down to the tidal zone. In backwaters, side channels, and feeder creeks, you’ll find largemouth, crappie, and panfish relating to laydowns, submerged brush, and grass edges.   • Blue and flathead catfish: Use heavy spinning or conventional gear, 30–80 lb braid, and abrasion-resistant leaders. Fresh cut gizzard shad, alewife, or other oily baits presented on Carolina or Santee rigs excel. Anchor above deep holes and current breaks, fan-casting multiple rods.
  • Smallmouth & river bass: Medium spinning or baitcasting tackle with 8–12 lb line works well. Ned rigs, 3–4 inch tube baits, small craw imitations, and compact crankbaits fished around rocks and current seams produce most of the year.
  • Shad & stripers: Light spinning rods, 6–10 lb line, 1/16–1/4 oz shad darts, small spoons, and inline spinners are staples. Cast slightly upriver and let baits swing through current lanes near the bottom.
  • Largemouth & pond fishing: Focus on mornings and evenings with topwaters, Texas-rigged worms, and spinnerbaits. Midday, probe deeper cover with jigs, soft plastics, and small swimbaits.
  • Panfish & kids’ fishing: Simple slip floats, small hooks, and live worms or crickets catch bluegill and perch around docks, riprap, and shoreline cover.
