Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:59 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Baltimore

Baltimore fishing revolves around the tidal Patapsco River, inner and outer harbor, and quick access to the upper Chesapeake Bay. This mix of deep channels, piers, riprap, and shallow flats gives shore and boat anglers consistent shots at striped bass, blue catfish, perch, and seasonal migrants. Urban surroundings aside, the system fishes like a classic estuary: moving tides, current seams, and bait schools dictate where you should be.

Seasonally, the year often starts with late-winter yellow perch and early catfish in the upper Patapsco and connected tributaries. As water hits the low 50s in spring, striped bass (rockfish) push shallow around channel edges, bridge pilings, and warmwater discharges. White perch, shad, and hickory shad runs add light-tackle action in upper river stretches. Summer brings mixed-bag fishing in Baltimore Harbor and the main bay—schoolie stripers, spot, croaker, bluefish, and aggressive blue catfish holding in deeper holes and structure. Fall is prime time: cooling water stacks bait on channel ledges, rock piles, and pier lines, and rockfish feed hard from surface to bottom. Winter slows most species, but big blue cats and harbor resident rockfish still bite on deeper ledges and around industrial structure.

Habitat-wise, think in layers. The main shipping channel and its edges are highways for rockfish and catfish; bridge pilings, docks, and harbor piers create predictable eddies where predators ambush bait; and shallow grass beds and mud flats hold perch, juvenile stripers, and forage. On windy days, leeward shorelines along the Patapsco and protected corners of the harbor can concentrate warmer, slightly clearer water—often enough to flip the bite on.

Effective tactics are straightforward but reward precision. For striped bass, work bucktail jigs, soft plastic paddle-tails, or metal jigs vertically along channel edges and bridge bases, keeping lures tight to bottom where current sweeps. At low light, cast topwater plugs or 4–5 inch soft plastics along riprap and pier shadows. A simple high-low rig with bloodworms or soft crab, dropped to the bottom, takes stripers, perch, and spot from shore-accessible piers.

Catfish specialists do well by anchoring on outside bends, deep holes, and downstream of structure. Use cut bunker, gizzard shad, or chicken-based baits on fish-finder or three-way rigs with enough weight to stay pinned in current. Give each spot 20–30 minutes; if you don’t get bit, move to the next piece of structure or depth change. White and yellow perch respond to small pieces of bloodworm on bottom rigs, as well as 1/16–1/8 oz jigs tipped with Gulp or grass shrimp, especially around pilings and rocky shoreline.

Success in Baltimore comes down to reading tide and current. Plan to fish the hour around tide changes when current softens, making it easier to present baits naturally. Watch for bird activity and surface nervous water to locate bait schools. In the heavily built-up harbor, quietly positioning your boat or choosing less-pressured piers and bank spots often makes the difference between a slow day and steady action.

The Best Fishing Spots around Baltimore

Chesapeake Bay

Baltimore’s gateway to the Chesapeake Bay gives anglers access to migratory striped bass (rockfish) in spring and fall, plentiful white perch and spot in summer, and occasional bluefish runs; work current seams near channel edges or bridge lines, or prowl shallow flats on calm mornings, while boats can roam from the Patapsco mouth to Hart-Miller Island and up toward the Back River and Middle River reaches.

Inner Harbor

The Inner Harbor is a high-visibility urban fishery where piers and bulkheads yield white perch, schoolie striped bass, and channel catfish, especially around light transitions and warmwater discharges; casting small jigs and soft plastics along pilings is productive, while boats work the deeper basins and the nearby bridge shadows leading toward the Patapsco River.

Patapsco River

From its tidal mouth by the Key Bridge through the industrial channels and coves, the Patapsco River offers brackish action for striped bass, white perch, and channel/blue catfish; jig riprap and structure on moving tides from shore, or drift and troll creek mouths and points by boat toward Curtis Creek, Bear Creek, and the harbor reaches.

Loch Raven Reservoir

A classic Baltimore-area lake, Loch Raven Reservoir produces largemouth bass, chain pickerel, crappie, and yellow perch; target submerged timber, points, and coves with finesse plastics and minnows, while spring crappie stack on brush and summer bass roam deeper breaks—shorelines, causeways, and rental boats open up plenty of water compared with urban spots like the Inner Harbor.

Gunpowder River

Renowned for clear, cold flows below the dams, the Gunpowder River is a wading fishery for wild brown and rainbow trout with steady insect hatches in spring and fall; pocket water and riffle seams reward careful presentations, while lower reaches also hold smallmouth and panfish closer to Gunpowder Falls State Park and the tidal Chesapeake Bay.

Hart-Miller Island

A boat-access hotspot northeast of the city, Hart-Miller Island features surrounding shoals and drop-offs that gather striped bass, white perch, and seasonal spot and croaker; drift jigs and bottom rigs along current-swept edges, then hop ashore to fan-cast beaches and groins, with nearby runs to Back River and Middle River when winds shift.

Back River

East of Baltimore, the tidal Back River and its coves produce white perch, schoolie striped bass, and hefty blue and channel catfish; shore anglers work parks and bridge abutments with bottom rigs and small jigs, while boaters probe creek mouths, marsh edges, and channel bends, with quick access out to Hart-Miller Island and the open bay.

Middle River

The Middle River complex of coves, marinas, and points offers sheltered fishing for striped bass, white perch, and summer spot; pitch jigs to docks and grass edges on tidal movement, or anchor and bait-fish channel edges, with short runs to Chesapeake Bay shoals and the wind-protected waters near Bowleys Quarters.

Fells Point

Historic Fells Point is a convenient shoreline venue where bulkheads and piers draw white perch, schoolie striped bass, and occasional spot; work the shadows along pilings and cobble edges at dawn, dusk, and tide turns, with easy walking access and proximity to the Inner Harbor and Canton waterfronts.
