Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Frederick
Fishing around Frederick, Maryland is built around moving water. The Monocacy River and its tributaries, plus nearby impoundments like Cunningham Falls Lake and small county ponds, give local anglers a wide mix of bass, trout, catfish, and panfish options. Knowing how these waters fish through the seasons is the key to consistent success.
Spring is prime on the Monocacy and Catoctin Creek. As flows stabilize and water temps climb into the 50s, smallmouth bass slide onto gravel bars, current seams, and the heads and tails of pools. Suspended minnow baits, 1/8–1/4 oz tube jigs in green pumpkin, and small craw-pattern crankbaits work well. Focus on softer current behind boulders and along ledge edges. In the stocked trout sections of Catoctin Creek and nearby put-and-take streams, downsized inline spinners, single salmon eggs, and small dough baits drifted naturally through riffles and runs are reliable producers.
By early summer, Frederick’s warmwater bite spreads out. In the rivers, smallmouth and rock bass push tighter to shade: undercut banks, laydowns, and shaded side channels. Wading anglers do best at first light and dusk, casting small topwaters like poppers and walking baits to current breaks, then switching to 3–4" soft plastics on light jigheads when the sun is high. Local ponds and small lakes—such as those in city and county parks—turn on for largemouth bass and bluegill. Work weed edges and any visible wood with wacky-rigged stick worms, compact jigs, and weightless soft jerkbaits. For kids or beginners, a simple bobber-and-worm rig around docks and cattails produces steady bluegill and pumpkinseed action.
In mid to late summer, low, clear water can make Monocacy bass wary. Scale down to lighter line, natural colors, and subtle presentations. Long casts with small finesse worms, Ned rigs, and 1/16–1/8 oz hair jigs pay off, especially in deeper mid-river slots and shaded cutbanks. Night fishing shines on Frederick’s still waters; channel catfish, carp, and the occasional walleye or bass prowl shallow flats. Soak cut bait, chicken liver, or dough baits on slip-sinker rigs just off bottom, casting to the transition where shallow flats drop into the main basin.
Fall may be the most underrated season. Cooling water pushes baitfish shallow and concentrates predators. On the Monocacy, smallmouth bass feed heavily along rocky points, ledges, and the heads of deeper pools; crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and swimbaits that tick bottom are effective. In Frederick-area lakes, largemouth and crappie stack on remaining green weeds and brush piles—vertical jig small soft plastics or minnows tight to cover. Panfish school up and can be quickly located with small jigs under a slip float, adjusting depth until you mark the bite.
Winter fishing is slower but still worthwhile on milder days. Target the deepest holes and slowest pools in the Monocacy for smallmouth, presenting small hair jigs or grubs barely drifting along the bottom. In lakes, fish vertically with tiny ice jigs and waxworms for bluegill and perch, or soak cut bait on the deepest structure for cold-water catfish. Across all seasons in Frederick, success comes from matching your approach to current flow, water clarity, and subtle structural changes—reading seams, depth transitions, and cover and putting your bait where fish can feed with minimal effort.
