Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

October Fishing Report
Cooler October temps around Temple Hills have the nearby Potomac River, Oxon Cove, and Piscataway Creek fishing well. Early and late best times with mid-day action on overcast days. Expect slightly stained water after fronts; a light NW breeze can push bait into creek mouths.
Largemouth Bass: Work dying grass edges with 3/8-oz chatterbaits, lipless cranks, or green pumpkin finesse jigs. Dawn topwater still pops on walking baits over sparse pads; switch to suspending jerkbaits as the sun climbs.
Crappie: Schooling tight to marinas, bridge pilings, and brush in 6–12 ft. Small hair jigs or 1/32–1/16 oz plastics under a float produce; slow your retrieve as water cools.
Bluegill: Consistent in park ponds and calm coves. Tiny worms or 1-inch grubs near wood are steady for numbers.
Channel Catfish: Evening bite along drop-offs and creek mouths. Cut gizzard shad or chicken liver on slip rigs does the trick.
Northern Snakehead: Fewer surface eats now; try 4–5 inch paddletails or swim jigs through remaining weeds, focusing on warming afternoon pockets.
Top tip: After a cold front, downsize and slow-roll darker baits along current seams where bait stacks—few bites, but they’ll be quality.
