Fishing Overview Detroit

Detroit fishing revolves around the fast-current Detroit River, its connection to Lake St. Clair to the north, and western Lake Erie to the south. The system produces some of the best walleye and smallmouth bass fishing in the United States, with an extended season thanks to moving water and diverse habitats. Anglers can fish from shore along the riverfront or launch from multiple public ramps to target a wide mix of species.

Spring is dominated by the walleye run on the Detroit River. As soon as ice leaves Lake Erie, walleyes push upriver in waves. Vertical jigging with 1/2–3/4 oz jigs tipped with minnows or soft plastics is the primary pattern, with heavier heads needed on windy days or in the main channel. Boat anglers stay vertical by using controlled drifts or short bursts of the trolling motor to match current speed. Key areas are sharp breaks off the main shipping channel, current seams behind islands and points, and the downstream edges of bridges where fish stack in eddies.

By late spring and summer, walleyes spread into Lake St. Clair and western Lake Erie, and smallmouth bass take center stage in the river. Look for bronzebacks around rock piles, seawalls, bridge pilings, and current breaks. Tube jigs, drop-shot rigs with baitfish imitators, and Ned rigs fished just off bottom are consistent producers. Target transitions where gravel meets sand or where a fast current lane borders slower eddies. In clearer water, long casts and natural colors matter; in stained water, upsizing and using noisy cranks or spinnerbaits helps bass zero in.

Detroit’s connection to Lake St. Clair also means access to muskie, pike, and mixed panfish. While many muskie anglers run farther up into St. Clair proper, the lower river and adjacent canals can hold fish, especially in summer. Large bucktail spinners, jerkbaits, and crankbaits trolled along weed edges, points, and breaks will contact active fish. For panfish like bluegill, perch, and crappie, focus on marinas, canals, and slack-water pockets off the main river using small jigs, wax worms, or minnows under a float.

Fall brings another strong walleye window as fish follow bait back toward the river. Trolling crankbaits along shipping channels and river mouths produces numbers and size. This is also prime time for steelhead and salmon that occasionally move through the system from Lake Erie and Lake Huron; casting spoons and spinners at river mouths, warm-water discharges, and deeper current seams gives you a shot at these roaming fish.

Winter fishing persists whenever ramps are usable and the river remains open. Vertical jigging the deepest holes in slower current can produce walleyes all winter, especially during stable weather. For shore anglers, fishing near warm-water discharges, bridge abutments, and deeper riprap with jigs, minnows, and bottom rigs will pick up walleye, catfish, and drum.

Tactically, Detroit anglers succeed by watching current and boat control above all. Use enough weight to maintain contact with bottom without constantly snagging, and make repeated drifts over productive contours you mark with electronics. Pay attention to subtle depth changes of 1–3 feet, as these often hold the highest concentration of fish. Matching your presentation to water clarity, keeping baits near bottom, and using the abundant man-made structure of this urban fishery will consistently produce in Detroit’s world-class waters.

The Best Fishing Spots around Detroit

Detroit River

Flowing between Detroit and Windsor, the Detroit River is famed for its spring walleye migration, when anglers jig deep current seams from boats and cast from seawalls; summer brings strong smallmouth bass, white bass, and channel catfish action, with occasional lake sturgeon encounters, while fall sees continued walleye and bass bites near structure and shipping channels—top stretches include the Ambassador Bridge drift and downstream near Trenton Channel and Belle Isle.

Lake St. Clair

Shallow and fertile, Lake St. Clair is one of North America’s premier smallmouth bass and muskellunge fisheries, with prolific spring and summer bass along weedlines and breaks, world-class muskie trolling and casting from late summer into fall, and steady yellow perch and panfish bites around grass flats; popular access and waypoints span from Anchor Bay to the mile roads off St. Clair Shores and the mouth of the Clinton River.

Belle Isle

Set in the middle of the Detroit River, Belle Isle offers productive shorelines, bridge abutments, and the protected Blue Heron Lagoon for shore anglers chasing spring walleye and white bass, summer smallmouth, carp, and catfish, and fall mixed-bag opportunities; boaters work current edges, riprap, and nearby flats, with easy moves to adjacent channels and the island’s points for changing wind and current.

Trenton Channel

A famed reach of the lower Detroit River, the Trenton Channel draws heavy spring walleye jigging and handlining, then transitions to summer smallmouth, drum, and catfish around eddies, pilings, and seawalls; fall brings another walleye push and mixed bites along channel edges, with shore access from nearby parks and robust boat traffic targeting current seams and structure.

Anchor Bay

On the northern end of Lake St. Clair, Anchor Bay is renowned for spring crappie and bluegill in canals and marinas, prolific summer smallmouth and walleye along weeds and drops, and excellent yellow perch schools that shift with wind and bait; in cold winters, safe ice brings a popular panfish and perch scene, while boaters roam broad flats during open water.

Elizabeth Park

Michigan’s first county park, Elizabeth Park in Trenton fronts the Detroit River with long seawalls and an adjacent boat launch, making it a go-to for spring walleye and white bass, summer smallmouth, sheepshead, and catfish, and fall walleye; anglers key on current breaks, bridge abutments, and shoreline structure, with easy access to the nearby Trenton Channel.

Bishop Park

Located on the Wyandotte riverfront, Bishop Park offers extensive seawalls and piers on the Detroit River that shine during the spring walleye and white bass runs, with summer action for smallmouth, freshwater drum, and catfish under calmer currents; anglers fan-cast jigs, live bait, and bottom rigs along current seams and around nearby docks and pilings.

Lake Erie Metropark

At the mouth of the lower Detroit River on western Lake Erie, Lake Erie Metropark offers shore and launch access to spring walleye moving between lake and river, summer largemouth bass, pike, and panfish in marshes and channels, and fall walleye and perch near breaks and current edges, with protected areas to fish when winds are up on the open lake.
