Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Natchez
Natchez, Mississippi sits on one of America’s greatest fisheries: the Mississippi River. Anglers here target everything from trophy blue catfish in the main channel to largemouth bass and crappie in quiet backwaters and oxbow lakes. The mix of big-river current, backwater sloughs and flooded timber creates a wide range of patterns that shift with river level and season.
Spring is prime time for bass, crappie and panfish around Natchez. As river temperatures climb into the 60s, fish push into protected backwaters, cuts, ditches and oxbows connected to the main river. Focus on flooded brush, laydowns and shallow wood with small soft plastics, spinnerbaits and square-bill crankbaits for bass. Crappie stack along the first drop off the bank and around visible timber; jigs under a fixed cork or small minnows slow-trolled along the treeline are consistent producers.
Through summer, much of the action shifts deeper and closer to current. Largemouth bass hold on outside bends with riprap, wing dikes and eddies where baitfish wash through. Early and late, throw topwaters along rock and grass edges; once the sun is high, work deeper crankbaits, Carolina rigs and Texas-rigged worms along current seams. Blue and channel catfish feed heavily along ledges, barge tie-offs, and downstream sides of wing dams. Cut shad, skipjack or commercial stink baits on a heavy slip-sinker rig produce well when anchored just off the main flow.
In fall, cooling water pulls bait to shallow flats and the mouths of side channels. This is one of the most consistent multi-species times in the Natchez area. White bass, striped bass and drum push shad to the surface on current breaks and at the heads of sandbars; small spoons, inline spinners and compact crankbaits catch them fast. Bass key on the same bait schools along wood and rock, and a simple white spinnerbait or shad-colored crankbait can cover water quickly. Crappie slide back to mid-depth brush and vertical cover; vertical jigging with small plastics in natural shad or chartreuse patterns is highly effective.
Winter fishing concentrates fish but rewards precise presentations. Catfish stack on deep holes, outside-bend trenches and scour holes below structure; slowly drift or bump cut bait along the bottom using just enough weight to maintain contact. Bass hold on the warmest, most stable water you can find—often darker backwaters, discharge areas, or deep bends out of heavy current. Jigs and tight-wobbling crankbaits crawled across rock and wood catch the majority of winter bites.
Across seasons, reading current and river level is crucial. Rising water generally pushes fish shallow into newly flooded cover; falling water pulls them to the nearest deeper break, ditch or channel edge. Look for current seams where fast and slack water meet—these edges concentrate bait and predators alike. On the Mississippi at Natchez, heavy tackle, strong line and sturdy hooks are important to control fish in big water and heavy cover. Mix big-river tactics with backwater finesse, and you can stay on fish around Natchez in almost any condition.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 15 beaches and bays in this area.
