Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Liberty
Liberty, Texas sits along the Trinity River east of Houston, giving anglers direct access to big‑river catfish, bass, and panfish plus nearby lakes, bayous, and backwater sloughs. The river corridor holds deep bends, timbered oxbows, and flooded cypress breaks that keep fish catchable 12 months a year, whether you fish from the bank, a small johnboat, or a kayak.
Seasonally, late winter through spring is prime on the Trinity around Liberty. Rising water pushes blue and channel catfish shallow along flooded shorelines and into backwater pockets; target current breaks where stain lines meet clearer water. Largemouth bass and crappie slide into side channels, marinas, and oxbows with brush and laydowns. As water temps hit the 60s, slow‑roll spinnerbaits, Texas‑rigged creature baits, and small jigs around wood. For crappie, 1/16–1/8 oz tube jigs or marabou jigs under a fixed cork work well along vertical timber and pilings.
Summer patterns on the Trinity focus on deeper bends, main‑river ledges, and holes below sandbars. Blue and channel catfish stack on ledges where depth drops quickly from 8–10 feet into 20+ feet. Anchor upstream of the drop and fan‑cast cut shad, chicken liver, or punch bait on slip sinker rigs; use enough weight to hold bottom in current. Flathead catfish lean on heavy cover: big timber piles, rock, and old barge tie‑offs. Target them after dark with live perch or live shad on stout gear, giving fish time to load the rod before driving the hook.
Bass anglers do best early and late in the day during the heat. Work topwaters and buzzbaits along grass edges in backwater lakes, then switch to squarebill crankbaits and soft plastics once the sun is up. Where bayous and drains enter the main river, fish the eddies and current seams; these intersections concentrate shad and often hold white bass, drum, and the occasional striped bass pushing up from the lower river.
Fall brings another strong bite as cooling temps push baitfish shallow again. Crappie stack on bridge pilings, brush piles, and deeper docks. Use electronics to find schools 10–18 feet down and hold directly above them with vertical presentations. Bass key on shad in the backs of creeks and pockets; small shad‑style crankbaits and flukes shine. Catfish remain reliable on cut bait along channel edges and outside bends.
Winter fishing is slower but consistent if you focus on deeper, stable water. Look for the deepest holes on your stretch of river or in nearby lakes, and fish slowly. For catfish, downsize hooks slightly and use fresh bait; light bites are common in cold water. Crappie bunch tightly in mid‑depth timber—hover jigs just above where you mark fish rather than dragging through the school.
Practical tips for Liberty‑area anglers include watching river levels closely, as rising or falling water often matters more than time of day. Mudline edges, small current breaks behind stumps, and subtle depth changes of only 1–2 feet can be key ambush spots. Heavy river cover demands abrasion‑resistant line: 15–20 lb mono or 30–50 lb braid for catfish and bass around wood. For heavily pressured banks, scale down: lighter line, smaller hooks, and natural baits or finesse plastics often out‑fish bulkier offerings.
Access points around Liberty typically include roadside pull‑offs, small ramps, and bridge crossings; many productive spots are reachable with short walks along the bank. A compact tackle setup—catfish rigs, a small box of jigs and soft plastics, and a few crankbaits—will cover nearly every situation on the Trinity River and surrounding waters near Liberty.
