Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Saint Joseph
Fishing in Saint Joseph, Michigan centers on the St. Joseph River and nearby Lake Michigan, creating a rare mix of big-water trolling and river fishing in one compact area. Anglers can target salmon, trout, bass, walleye, panfish, and catfish from boats, shorelines, and the long concrete piers at the river mouth.
Seasonal patterns drive most tactics around St. Joe. Late winter through early spring, river steelhead are the main draw. Fresh fish push into the St. Joseph River with every warm-up and rain, holding in deeper holes, current breaks, and along seams near the Berrien Springs and downstream stretches. As water warms into April and May, coho and brown trout stage along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, and nearshore trolling in 20–60 feet of water can be excellent. By summer, the focus shifts offshore to chinook salmon, lake trout, and steelhead over deeper structure, while the river and harbor fill with smallmouth, largemouth, and panfish. Fall brings king salmon and lake-run browns back toward the river mouth, with casting from the Saint Joseph North and South Piers producing some of the year’s best action.
The habitat mix here is broad. The St. Joseph River offers deep holes, current seams, and shoreline eddies ideal for steelhead, walleye, catfish, and smallmouth. Marina basins and backwaters around St. Joseph and Benton Harbor provide quiet, warmer water for crappie, bluegill, and largemouth. On Lake Michigan, sandbars, subtle breaks, and temperature edges set up trolling lanes in spring, while mid-lake humps and the thermocline line become key salmon and lake trout structure in summer.
Techniques vary widely but are very patternable. For river steelhead, drift spawn bags, beads, or jigs beneath a float along current seams, or bounce bottom with spawn and egg imitations in deeper slots. Light fluorocarbon leaders and careful boat or shore positioning to cover each seam thoroughly are crucial. In summer, smallmouth respond well to tube jigs, Ned rigs, and finesse drop-shots around riprap, bridge pilings, and rocky edges. For panfish in marinas and backwaters, tiny jigs tipped with waxworms or small plastics under fixed floats keep baits in the strike zone above weeds.
On Lake Michigan, most anglers troll for salmon and trout. Productive setups include:
- Downriggers with spoons or flasher–fly combinations run at or just above the thermocline.
- Dipsy divers or slide divers to spread lines laterally and probe mid-depth zones.
- Leadcore or copper lines with spoons for high, roaming steelhead and coho.
Vary trolling speeds and make frequent S-turns to trigger followers, watching which inside or outside rods fire to dial in speed and direction. Work pierheads, river plumes, and color lines in spring, then shift deeper as surface temps rise.
Shore and pier anglers around Saint Joseph can do very well by timing runs and conditions. For salmon and trout, cast spoons, crankbaits, and spinners along the piers during low light or when onshore winds push colder water in. In stable summer weather, target nighttime catfish with cut bait or stink baits on the bottom in the river, and daytime perch with spreader rigs and minnows when schools slide inside.
