Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:49 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Anaconda

Fishing around Anaconda, Montana centers on a mix of productive reservoirs, classic Western trout rivers, and lightly pressured alpine lakes. The area’s hub is Georgetown Lake, but anglers also work the Big Hole River corridor, Flint Creek, Silver Lake, and numerous small forest lakes spread through the Pintler range. Cold water, varied structure, and strong insect life give this region consistent action from ice-out through early winter.

Seasonal patterns drive most success. In early spring, as ice comes off Georgetown Lake and nearby reservoirs, trout and kokanee cruise the shallows, making bank fishing with bait, small spoons, and streamers highly effective. Late spring through early summer, snowmelt swells nearby rivers and creeks; this is prime time for nymphing and streamer fishing for rainbow and brown trout in the Big Hole system and Flint Creek. Summer brings stable flows and strong hatchesβ€”think caddis, PMDs, and terrestrialsβ€”so dry-fly fishing shines on moving water, while deeper weed edges on Georgetown Lake and other reservoirs hold kokanee, rainbows, brookies, and tiger trout.

By late summer and early fall, cool nights push fish shallow again. This is one of the best windows for larger brown trout in rivers and for chunky rainbows and brook trout on Georgetown. Fall also brings aggressive strikes on big streamers and brighter spoons along rocky shorelines and inlet areas. Once safe ice forms, the Anaconda area turns into a reliable ice fishing destination, with Georgetown Lake, Silver Lake, and smaller ponds producing through midwinter on jigs, soft plastics, and deadstick rigs.

Key habitats vary by water. Georgetown Lake features shallow flats, weed beds, and numerous points; focus on transitions where weeds meet open water, especially near inlets and outlets. In rivers like nearby sections of the Big Hole and Flint Creek, target riffle-run-pool sequences, undercut banks, and seams below boulders. High-country lakes and beaver ponds in the Pintler and Flint Creek ranges reward hikers who work drop-offs near inlets and windward shorelines where food concentrates.

Techniques and lures should match water type. On lakes, trolling wedding rings, small dodgers, and flashy spoons at varying depths covers water efficiently for kokanee and rainbows. Casting 1/8–1/4 oz marabou jigs or small swimbaits along weed edges is a dependable option, especially mornings and evenings. Fly anglers on stillwaters do well with balanced leeches, chironomids, and woolly buggers under an indicator or slowly stripped on intermediate lines.

On moving water, carry a tight selection of nymphsβ€”pheasant tails, hare’s ears, stonefliesβ€”and pair them with small indicators or Euro-style rigs for precise drifts. During summer, size 14–18 caddis, mayfly patterns, and foam terrestrials take surface-feeding trout in broken water. Streamers in olive, black, and white excel in off-color flows or low light; swing or strip them along cutbanks and around woody debris for larger browns.

Tactical tips for the Anaconda area include fishing early and late during bright summer days, using fluorocarbon leaders in clear reservoirs, and downsizing presentations on heavily pressured weekends at Georgetown Lake. In rivers, move frequently until you find active fish; many productive runs hold only a few quality trout. For ice fishing, follow weed lines and subtle depth changes, and don’t hesitate to hole-hop until you mark fish. With varied water types within a short drive, adjusting to conditions and rotating between lakes, rivers, and small creeks is the key to consistent fishing around Anaconda.
