Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:10 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~14 days on 29th June
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    363,765 km
    Proximity:
    98.4 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Papillion

Papillion, Nebraska offers convenient, close-to-town fishing in a network of small lakes and park ponds that are regularly managed and easy to learn. Waters like Walnut Creek Lake, Halleck Park Lake, and nearby neighborhood ponds give anglers a mix of bass, panfish, catfish, and seasonal rainbow trout, all within a short drive of central Papillion.

Seasonal patterns in Papillion revolve around water temperature and weed growth. In early spring, focus on the warmest, shallowest corners of lakes where sun-soaked coves and riprap banks draw largemouth bass and panfish. Slowly worked jigs, small soft-plastics, and live minnows or worms under a float are reliable. By late spring and early summer, bluegill and other sunfish stack up around shorelines, spawning beds, and any visible cover; this is prime time for simple bobber-and-worm rigs for kids, and small jigs or micro-plastics for more selective anglers.

Summer fishing in Papillion lakes favors early and late in the day. Largemouth bass slide to weed edges, deeper brush, and any man-made structure. Work weightless soft plastics, Texas-rigged worms, and chatterbaits along weedlines at dawn and dusk. Midday, move slightly deeper with small crankbaits or drop-shot rigs on outside edges of vegetation or around submerged points. Channel catfish offer steady summer action on cut bait, stink bait, or nightcrawlers fished on bottom near creek inlets, wind-blown banks, or along riprap.

Fall brings some of the best multi-species action around Papillion. Cooling water pushes shad and baitfish shallow again, and bass and crappie follow. Cover water with small crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and swimbaits along rocky banks and remaining green weeds. Crappie begin to group up on deeper brush and drop-offs; use slip bobbers and minnows or 1/16–1/8 oz jigs to probe these areas vertically. As vegetation dies back, fish become easier to locate with simple depth and structure changes.

Some Papillion-area waters receive seasonal rainbow trout stockings, creating a short but exciting cold-water fishery. Target trout from shore with small in-line spinners, 1/32–1/16 oz marabou jigs, or prepared dough baits fished on light line (4–6 lb test). Focus on inlets, wind-blown banks, or any point where deeper water swings close to shore.

Habitat and tactical tips are straightforward in these compact lakes. Look for:

  • Riprap dams and shorelines: prime for bass, catfish, and spring panfish.
  • Weed edges and pads: excellent for bass in summer; work topwaters and weedless plastics.
  • Fishing piers and jetties: concentrate fish and make great starting spots for families.
  • Creek inlets and coves: higher oxygen and food flow attract catfish, carp, and active bass.

Downsize tackle to match the small-water environment: medium-light to medium spinning gear, 6–10 lb mono or fluoro for general use, and ultra-light setups for bluegill and stocked trout. Quiet approaches, long casts, and keeping mobile—hitting multiple points, corners, and visible cover—will quickly reveal the most productive spots on Papillion’s lakes.
