Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Carlsbad
Carlsbad, on northern San Diego County’s coastline, fishes well 12 months a year thanks to consistent water temps, beach structure, and nearby kelp. The primary zones are the open surf around Tamarack and South Carlsbad, the jetties and pockets near the lagoon mouths, and nearshore reefs and kelp beds a short run by boat or kayak. Light gear, natural baits, and careful tide timing consistently produce here.
Seasonally, spring brings improving water clarity and more active barred surfperch and yellowfin croaker in the troughs close to shore. Use 6–9 ft surf rods with 8–12 lb mono, a Carolina rig, and small sand crabs, mussel, or Gulp! sandworms. Focus on transition tides, especially the last half of the rising tide when perch and croaker slide tight to the beach. Halibut start staging along the sandy points and around jetty edges; slow-roll 3–5 inch swimbaits or small jerkbaits across the bottom.
Summer is prime for corbina, spotfin croaker, and shallow-water halibut on Carlsbad’s beaches. Sight-fishing corbina in skinny water is a local specialty: walk quietly, polarized glasses on, and look for cruising fish within a rod length of the foam line. Fish ghost shrimp or soft-shell sand crabs on light fluorocarbon leaders (6–8 lb) and minimal weight. Warm months also see mackerel, bonito, and the occasional barracuda within casting range at dawn and dusk; metal spoons and small surface irons cast from jetties or kayaks shine when baitfish are pushed tight to shore.
Fall often provides the most consistent action, with stable weather and active predators. Inshore kelp lines and rocky high spots off Carlsbad hold calico bass, sand bass, sheepshead, and rockfish. A 15–30 lb setup with braided main line and fluorocarbon leaders works well. Fish 3–6 inch swimbaits, leadheads with squid strips, or dropper loops with cut bait vertically along kelp edges and rock piles. Halibut continue to bite on sandy approaches to reefs and just outside the surf line; drift the edges with live bait or slow-trolled hardbaits.
Winter cools the water but doesn’t shut down Carlsbad’s fishing. Surfperch are a staple, and light-tackle anglers score consistently during mid-tide windows when small swells allow good presentation. Use high–low rigs with size 4–6 hooks and small baits presented just beyond the first bar. Leopard sharks, shovelnose guitarfish, and bat rays prowl deeper troughs after dark year-round; fish oily baits on heavier 20–30 lb gear, focusing on deeper pockets identified at low tide.
Habitat and structure reading are critical. Walk the beaches at low tide to mark cuts, rips, and holes, then return to fish them as water covers the structure. Around the lagoon mouths and jetties, cast uptide and let baits swing naturally with the current. Keep terminal tackle simple: Carolina rigs for croaker, corbina, and halibut; dropper loops and knocker rigs for rockfish and bass; and long leaders with small hooks for pressured, clear-water conditions. Consistent success in Carlsbad comes from matching small local forage, staying mobile, and timing your trips around tides and manageable swell rather than the calendar.
